Starting August 5th and running through to August 7th, 2010 the 15th Canadian National H.O.G. Rally brings Harley-Davidson enthusiasts together to share their love for the open road in Sherbrooke, Quebec. Deeley Harley-Davidson® Canada, the exclusive distributor of Harley-Davidson motorcycles in Canada, is proud to host the event to thank their most loyal and devoted Customers – the H.O.G. members. Their passion and support for the Harley-Davidson Brand makes the Brand what it is. With an expected attendance of over 1,500 participants, this event has all of the makings of becoming a memorable Rally.

Gina McNeil, Manager, Enthusiast Services, comments, “I am really excited about this year’s event. We are taking a grass-roots approach by creating a fun atmosphere where like-minded people can share their common passion in motorcycling. Although there are exclusive H.O.G. member-only events, such as seminars and ceremonies, there are plenty of activities where the public can participate as spectators. We welcome everyone in the Sherbrooke area to come out on Saturday morning to witness a parade of over 800 motorcycles. Thanks to everyone involved, including the local Retailer and Chapter, as well as the City of Sherbrooke itself for allowing us to host this event in such a biker-friendly setting. It will be a great event and we are looking forward to seeing everyone in Sherbrooke in August.”

Starting on August 5th, Sherbrooke Harley-Davidson will be the first place in Canada to test ride a brand new 2011 Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Demo rides are available to enjoy for free for anyone with a valid motorcycle licence. Bring your riding gear and make sure you do not miss this opportunity to ride the new Harley-Davidson models.

On August 6th, the Delta Sherbrooke Hotel will host a Show ‘N Shine competition. This event will feature the best customized motorcycles at the Rally and categories will include Antique, Three-Wheeled, and Pro Custom. The public will also have the opportunity to get involved by voting for the People’s Choice award. Motorcycles will start rolling in at 10 a.m. with the winner presentations at 1 p.m.

On August 7th as of 10 a.m., spectators can watch a fascinating scene at the University of Sherbrooke as over 800 motorcycles prepare for a formal parade through the streets of Sherbrooke. The parade departs at 10:30 a.m. with the best viewing locations along Rue King (between Boulevard Jacques-Cartier South and Boulevard Queen Victoria) and Rue Wellington North (between Rue Frontenac and Rue King). Spectators at the university will enjoy watching all of the bikes returning from the parade. The always crowd-pleasing field games begin near the university stadium at 12:30 p.m. Passers-by can cheer on the H.O.G. members as they compete in various challenges, such as the slow motorcycle race, hula hoop toss, and ball drop.

RUTHLESS RACING INC. STARTS STRONG

Season Opener of 2010 Parts Canada Superbike Series in Mirabel, Quebec

The road racing team of Ruthless Racing Inc., supported by Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada, made its first appearance on the 2010 Parts Canada Superbike Series schedule with a visit to the first round of competition, staged at the new Circuit ICAR track just north of Montréal, Quebec from May 27 through May 30.

This year, the Ruthless Racing Inc. squad consists of Olivier Spilborghs, Dave Estok, and Darren James. James and Estok are riding Buell 1125R bikes in the Sportbike class, and Spilborghs is competing on a Buell XB9R motorcycle in the Sport Twins division.

With the demise of the Buell brand, some track pundits were wondering why Deeley has chosen to race this year with the Ruthless team. Team owner and former Canadian Thunder champion Darren James explains, “Deeley’s history in racing goes back over seventy years and [has] supported many great riders. […] Also, as many people are aware, we have been talking about a Harley-Davidson XR1200 spec class for Canada. It’s working well in other countries and the AMA is just starting it this year, so we want to stay involved. We feel it will work well here. What we’re doing this year keeps the Buell name out there, and there are still some brand-new bikes available that are very well priced and come with a two-year warranty. This year’s effort is toned down from last year, but Ruthless Racing Inc. is still here and we owe that to the senior management at Deeley; they are astute business men who understand the value in racing.”

On the race track, both Darren and Dave worked with the Ruthless Racing Inc. crew, headed up by Thomas Morin, sorting out handling and power issues through the Sportbike practice sessions, and both were able to lower their lap times substantially. “We’re just off Steve’s [Crevier] time from last year,” enthused Dave Estok. Likewise, Darren James was given cause to smile. “I found something,” he beamed after placing fourth in the pre-race warm-up on Sunday morning. “We made some changes to the front end and I’m really comfortable.”

On race day, the Ruthless team’s riders’ goals would be tested. Both James and Estok were aiming at top-ten finishes and both voiced his desire to beat his teammate. “I’d like to win obviously,” said James, “but realistically, top ten for sure, top six would be nice.” Estok had similar expectations stating, “I’m going to be running the whole series, so grabbing some points is really important. I won’t be happy if I don’t get top ten. I’d like top five.”

Upon completion of the twelve-lap National Championship race, both riders achieved their goal of a top-ten finish, James with a secure ride to eighth place and Estok in seventh. Estok’s ride was not an easy one, as he was one of four riders involved in a fierce dice for fourth position. Veterans Estok on the Buell bike and Frank Trombino (Honda) swapped positions and paint with rookie sensations Cody Matechuck (Suzuki) and Kenny Reidman (Triumph) for much of the race, much to the delight of the large Quebecois crowd. Estok was just 0.243 seconds behind Reidman at the finish. “There was a point where I thought I could be fourth, but hey, it was a real good race; the kids are fast. I’m happy with my ride, I got top ten, I beat my teammate, and I got some points… and I didn’t fall down.”

Meanwhile in the Sport Twins class, Olivier Spilborghs had qualified his Buell XB9R bike in third behind Brent Strong (Suzuki) and Rob Busby (Buell XB12R model), but in the post-session dyno run, he produced too much horsepower and was penalized with a back-row start for the National Championship race. Unfazed by the handicap, Olivier executed one of his textbook hole shot starts and rocketed the Buell motorcycle into third place as the pack entered turn two off the start. That was as far as he would get in the race, as Busby on his Buell bike reeled in fast starter Strong to take the race lead just past the halfway mark, a lead he would not relinquish. “I got a good start, and that’s what you gotta do,” Spilborghs explained after the final. “There’s lots of room out there, so there was no problem passing. I couldn’t make up the difference on those guys, so I just rode my own race and yeah, I’m happy with third. I told you I want this championship, so these points are important.”

At the next two rounds of the Parts Canada Superbike Championship in Calgary (June 24 to June 27), Dave Estok and Olivier Spilborghs will represent the Ruthless Racing Inc. team each in their respective championship chases. Team owner Darren James will be racing in England and Scotland on a Harley-Davidson XR 1200 bike in the support class for the British Superbike series. He will return to Canada in time for the Mosport double-header (July 9 to July 11), at which venue he is hoping to debut the XR 1200 model in Canada’s Sport Twins class.

BMW Motorrad Canada and Rush HD jump into Canadian Superbike for 2010

BMW Motorrad Canada, confirming that it will be fielding a two rider factory superbike team in the Parts Canada Superbike Championship in 2010, is also pleased to announce a collaboration with Rush HD as the title sponsor of the Rush HD/BMW Motorrad Canada Superbike Team.

Rush HD is Canada’s only high-octane, no fear, no limits extreme sports adventure HD channel. Rush HD is owned and operated by High Fidelity HDTV Inc., Canada’s leading HD broadcaster and production enterprise whose four all-HD channels provide Canadians with best-in-class non-fiction programming on the themes of Nature, Culture and Adventure.

In conjunction with the superbike sponsorship, the Rush HD/BMW Motorrad Canada Superbike Team will be followed all season long by a documentary film crew capturing the creation and activities of a superbike team in action, for the production and broadcast of a six part one hour mini series to be shown on Rush HD this fall. John Panikkar, Rush HD’s chief executive, said “Rush HD is delighted to be title sponsor of this year’s Rush HD/BMW Motorrad Canada Superbike Team. The action-adventure programming we broadcast on Rush HD is a natural fit with the action and excitement of a superbike racing series. ”

Chris Duff, Manager, Motorrad Marketing, stated, “We are thrilled to have Rush HD onboard as we prepare and race the most exciting new entry in the 2010 Canadian Superbike season”.

Both riders from BMW’s 2009 team, Francis Martin and Michael Ferreira, will once again be the riders in the hot seat, tasked with bringing a superbike victory to BMW Motorrad Canada in 2010.

Francis Martin is no stranger to racing in the Superbike Class having won two Canadian Superbike Championships in 1999 and 2005 respectively along with another litre bike title in 2002, the Pro Open Sportbike Championship. “I'm very exited about the next season and have been waiting for this moment for a long time” says Francis Martin. “Now we have the bike to win and the tuner with whom I won my last championship”.

Michael Ferreira will be making his Superbike Class debut in 2010 and continues his streak as the longest serving rider on the team after racing the BMW boxer twins in Canadian Thunder and Pro Sportbike classes since 2007. Ferreira, the winner of the 2006 RACE Pro 600 Sportbike Championship, will not have any trouble transferring his skills back onto an in-line four race bike from the twins he recently has competed on.

When asked about his thoughts of racing in the Superbike Class, Ferreira had this to say, "From the day I started racing, my dream was always to race in the premier class against the best riders in the country. Three years ago I was blessed with an opportunity to race for BMW and it’s been an experience of a lifetime with what now will be the highlight of my racing career. I couldn't be happier than to share this experience with the brand that has had so much faith in me."

Joining the Rush HD / BMW Motorrad Superbike Team this season is famed Canadian superbike tuner Patrice Goyette of Mobile PG. Patrice recently was the main crew chief behind Clint McBain of Acceleration Racing the past two years and has a previous relationship with Francis Martin from when they won the 2005 Canadian Superbike Championship.

“Staying with our same two riders this year was always the plan when we talked about jumping into the Superbike Class” said Chris Duff, Manager Motorrad Marketing. “Now that we have also been able to add a huge asset in Patrice, this should show race fans our commitment to winning races in 2010.”

Also partnering with the Rush HD / BMW Motorrad Superbike Team this year will be three new sponsors: Joe Rocket, Hotbodies Bodywork and Hindle Exhausts. Joe Rocket returns to BMW after a three year hiatus and Bruce Parker, President of Joe Rocket Canada enthused: “ we are excited about renewing our relationship with BMW Motorrad Canada and looking forward to BMW adding to our history of Rocket Racing success.”

With the launch of the new S1000RR, BMW Motorrad now has the arsenal needed to fight for superbike championships worldwide and Canada is no exception.

The 2010 Canadian Superbike Championship begins with Round 1 from the ICAR facility at Mirabel Quebec May 28-30 and then continues for Rounds 2 & 3 at Calgary’s Race City Motorsport Park June 24-27. Rounds 4 & 5 will be the annual mid-summer Mosport Doubleheader Weekend July 8-11 and the final two rounds, Rounds 6 & 7 will take place August 5-8 from Shubenacadie Nova Scotia. Follow all rounds of the Canadian Superbike Championship on TSN HD in 2010.

The Great Canadian KYMCO Winners!

The Great Canadian KYMCO Contest has given both KYMCO Canada and our local authorized KYMCO dealers an opportunity to give back to Canadians. This year we allocated five KYMCO vehicles to donate to individuals or organizations that stand out in our communities. We got some outstanding nominations, but there can only be 5 winners, and here they are!

The Cool Aid Society – Victoria, BC
The Cool Aid Society is a non-profit organization with over 300 volunteers that has been working to eliminate homelessness through community based solutions since 1968. Nominated by Scooter Underground, the Cool Aid Society will receive a donation of a KYMCO Vitality 50 2T scooter which will allow staff members to travel around their urban centre and reach marginalized members of their community. A scooter is particularly helpful in this effort as it is a friendly and non-threatening vehicle in the eyes of the community members to whom they are reaching out. Congratulations Cool Aid Society on winning the Great Canadian KYMCO Contest and on the support you provide your local community!

Municipal District of Bonnyville Public Safety Department – Bonnyville, AB
The Municipal District of Bonnyville Public Safety Department responds to the needs of their community by providing effective local law enforcement and related community based services, all in an accountable and cost effective manner. With a large ATV community, the department offers training for safe and lawful operation of ATVs to school age children through their School Resource Officers. They also patrol approximately 70km of the recreational trail system that spans the entire municipality. Nominated by X Power and Performance, the department will be
awarded an MXU 500 ATV which will provide them with a modern, reliable vehicle that will not only be used to patrol the recreational trail system, but will also be used for ATV safety courses with the youth of the community. Congratulations to all the staff in the Public Safety Department on winning the Great Canadian KYMCO Contest and on the support you provide to your Municipality!

Ontario Camp for the Deaf – Parry Sound, ON
Established in 1962, The Ontario Camp for the Deaf is run by the Bob Rumball Organization. The Camp aims to meet the social, recreational and spiritual needs of the deaf and special needs community (both children and adult) in a residential summer camp setting. The camp operates solely on donated funds, goods, and services while subsidizing over 60% of the children who attend. Nominated by Studio Cycle Group, the Ontario Camp for the Deaf has been awarded a UXV 500 UTV to help them not only maintain the 400 acre camp ground, but to also help transport visitors around the property. It is worth noting that the camp is also a CMRC sanctioned race venue which welcomes hundreds of riders and supporters to their site every summer. Congratulations to everyone at the Bob Rumball Organization and to all volunteers who work at the camp on winning the Great Canadian KYMCO Contest and on the support you provide to the deaf, special needs, and ATV communities in Ontario and beyond!

Zec Mars-Moulin – Laterrière, QC
Established in 1978, Zecs are territorial infrastructures that are run by non-profit organizations; they are responsible for the management and conservation of wildlife on their territories. The 15-20 volunteers at Zec Mars-Moulin educate local visitors and tourists alike about the wildlife in the area, responsible hunting and fishing, and the importance of environmental protection. Nominated by Bouchard Sports Loisirs, and the recipients of an MXU 500 ATV, Zec Mars-Moulin will be able to use the quad as both a surveillance vehicle and a work vehicle to transport equipment and people. Congratulations to all the volunteers at Zec Mars-Moulin on winning the Great Canadian KYMCO Contest and on the work you do in wildlife conservation and the protection of the environment in your area!

Springhill Fire Department – Springhill, NS

Established in 1890, the Springhill Fire Department with its 30 volunteers faces some very difficult terrain in its area. From large open fields surrounded by rural homes and businesses to forested acreage, the firefighters sometimes find it difficult, if not impossible, to reach some of these areas with conventional fire equipment. Nominated by Warren MacDonald & Son Garage Ltd., and the recipients of an MXU 500 ATV, the Springhill Fire Department has also offered to make the unit available to assist the efforts of the local Search and Rescue team. Congratulations
to all the brave volunteers at the Springhill Fire Department on winning the Great Canadian KYMCO Contest and for the services you provide to your local community!

Alberta’s Shane Cuthbertson, BC’s Geoff Nelson, Ontario’s Brian Wojanarski, Tyler Linton and Quebec-based Patrick Beaule and Allan Lachapelle are some of the Pro riders who showed fine form over the weekend.

Two hard luck award candidates would have been Machine Yamaha Toyota team rider Jake Stapleton who was on track for a top finish but a mishap saw him pull out early on the first day and Alberta youngster Ben Riviere who broke his arm yet rode on to the finish to win the Amateur C class.

The CEC has become the true Canadian Championship with support from all 6 major motorcycle manufacturers and riders travelling from 7 of the 10 Canadian provinces to test their skills against Canada’s best off-road riders. The Quebec round saw riders from the Atlantic provinces attending for the first time.

The Inside Motorcycles Top Pro Junior award went to Simon Ferraton this past weekend while local rider, Jean Pellerin won the Rekluse Clutch Top Amateur in Extreme test award.

The final event of the CEC takes place in Parry Sound, Ontario this weekend with competition heading for the lakeside town for the two-day competition. Parry Sound has a long history in welcoming motorcyclists in its community.

At all CEC events spectators are welcome and there is no entry fee to see the best off-road riders in Canada shine. For more information on this weekend’s CEC event check out the website HERE.

Mirabel Magic for Buell

The Deeley Racing/Ruthless Racing Inc. team -powered by Buell had another constructive and rewarding outing at the Moto Journal ICAR Parts Canada Superbike races this past weekend. Racing for the first time on the converted site, the event was blessed with excellent weather, which attracted a big crowd to the track.

Darren James’ charge from the back on the Buell® 1125R sportbike was just an example of the “show” provided on the track. James re-entered the pit due to a broken shifter at the end of the warm-up for the Yoshimura Sportbike National Championship. Just as the field was staging for the start, he swapped his bike for the “B” bike which he had not even tested, and caught up with the rest of the pack just as they went around the first corner.

From then on, it was simply entertaining for Buell® fans as the former Thunder champ carved his way through the field to a very respectable 14th place finish, despite a start in 22nd position in a field of 25. “That’s racing,” commented James post-race, in reference to the component failure. “But you saw the team’s dedication. They got the B bike ready so fast for me, I mean I could have been half a lap back, or worse. That’s why I rode as hard as I did. I’m sure it was fun to watch, and it was fun for me, too, but that ride was for them.”

Dave Estok was disappointed after the Sportbike final. He had qualified in 11th on Saturday, but suffered a crash on lap three of the 14-lap final while running in fifth and on-pace with the leaders. “I hurt my back a little bit and kind of rung my bell, but I’m OK. I’m not very happy obviously. One second I’m going in at the same speed as last lap, and the next thing I know I was on my head,” the Florida rider explained.

Steve Crevier qualified his Buell® sportbike in seventh place and, like his team boss, provided a large amount of entertainment for fans as he involved himself in a huge dice with the 14-year-old Yamaha sensation Royce McLean and 17-year-old Karl Daigle on a Kawasaki. Crevier swapped positions back and forth throughout the race, putting the Buell® 1125R bike in sixth at race end. “Those pesky kids were trying to get the best of me,” Steve said laughing after the race. “We’ve had some issues this weekend, and the team’s done a great job and we’re having fun,” he commented while watching Pete Snell and the crew getting his Buell® 1125R superbike ready.

In the Parts Canada Superbike Pirelli Superpole, the roar of the 1125R superbike was a sweet, singular sound, as Steve Crevier circulated the 14-turn course alone on a single flying lap qualifier. Not overly pleased, Steve admitted that it could have gone better and promised to “gather it up” in the actual race.
In the 16-lap premiere class main event, Crevier did “gather up” the race time he was looking for, but it did not come easy. Steve launched well using the torque of the 1125R bike to his advantage, but his starting position on the outside of row two left him boxed in amongst a plethora of Japanese 1000cc superbikes. Drawing from his years of experience, Steve once again offered the crowd a display of his magic as he made his way through the field to eventually finish fourth, less than a second behind the Yamaha R1 of Andrew Nelson.

“That wasn’t as much fun as the sportbike race where we went back and forth. In this one, I just kept passing guys,” Steve said smiling just before the podium presentations. “That’s where I should be,” he said, pointing at the podium. “That’s where we’re headed. We were getting closer before the flag came out. I do have to thank the Deeley/Ruthless crew that worked so hard for the team, and also all the fans from the province for coming out to watch us. That’s really good to see,” he stated, flashing the iconic Crevier smile.

Tickets go on sale Wednesday (June 17th) for the 32nd Montréal Supermotocross

Montréal, June 16, 2009 - Tickets go on sale Wednesday June 17 at 10 a.m. for the 32nd edition of the Montréal Supermotocross, presented by Coors Lights and Parts Canada. For the 2009 competition, which will be held Saturday October 3 at the Olympic Stadium, organizers will offer fans interesting additions to the program; EnduroCross, a new class that is quickly catching on with the crowd, and an even more exciting high flying Freestyle competition.

"The Montreal Supermotocross will become more than ever the annual fall event of choice as we will be offering motorsports and extreme sports fans what they really want," according to Pierre Corbeil, organizer of the event. "Over the past few months, we only had one goal in mind: to improve on last year's presentation. As always, we want to offer a show where the best of our previous events is brilliantly blended with new spectacular classes. As of now, we can assure fans that come to the Olympic Stadium on October 3, they will enjoy an evening filled with extreme entertainment."

The difficulty of gathering such an eclectic group of riders in one place for one night, and set up the right layout for each class, has forced the organizers to withdraw Autocross from this year's event. This development will enable track designers to map out a world-class stage for Freestyle riders, a collective who don't know the concept of gravity. It will also enable the EnduroCross riders, which run on a specially designed extreme off-road style layout that includes every types of man-made obstacles, the chance to show the Montreal public the intense action of this cutting edge form of racing. A detailed report of all classes and riders involved in this spectacular program will be unveiled over the next few months.

"One of the most interesting improvements made last year for the fans was the new track layout, especially the location of the starting line for the motocross and quad races. With modifications to our lineup for the upcoming October event, we will have more freedom again to improve on the design of the track and offer fans a better overall view of the show, whatever the location of their seats in the stadium," added Pierre Corbeil.

The Montreal Supermotocross is one of the most popular events of the year presented at the Olympic Stadium, drawing more than 50,000 fans from Quebec, Eastern Ontario, and the bordering states of the USA. More than 150 riders from Canada, the United States, and Europe will participate in this year's competition.

The best seats in the house, as well as all reserved seating, will go on sale Wednesday, June 17, 2009. Tickets can be ordered online at Admission
or by calling (514) 790-1245 or 1 800 361-4597). Ticket prices range from $10.00, $19.00, and $28.00 to $37.50 for the best seats in the house. Tickets will also be available at participating motorcycle dealers from all regions of Quebec. The list will be published shortly. Millson Gets Up To Speed at ICAR

Mirabel, Québec CANADA – June 16, 2009 – RMP Racing’s Pro Superbike racer Ross Millson put in an impressive effort at the second round of the Parts Canada Superbike Championship earning a finish just outside of the top ten.

After a crash at the first round of Canada’s premier road racing series Millson was determined to bring home at least a top ten finish for his crew and sponsors at the 2.8 km Circuit ICAR track built on the grounds of the Mirabel Airport.

Throughout the weekend Millson, chief mechanic Mark Millson and Accelerated Technologies owner John Sharrard worked with a new Race Tech rear shock which lead to promising results.

“We were using scrubs for many of the early practice sessions and we seemed to be getting less tire wear than other teams going out on fresh rubber” said Millson. “This track presents many challenges when it comes to suspension set up and tire choice.”

Looking to maximize the new found set up, Millson chose to go with a softer tire compound for Saturday morning’s pre-SuperPole qualifying session.

“The choice to go out on the softer tire was worth a shot, but it ultimately back fired” said Millson. “Starting from seventeenth was obviously going to present some challenges on a one line track like ICAR, but we knew that if we went back to our original setup we would be there at the end.”

Confident in which tire compound would work best with the suspension settings, the Millson brothers made a last minute gearing change to maximize what the bike can do on the straights.

Millson made up for a less then stellar qualifying effort with a great start aboard his Inside Motorcycles sponsored Suzuki GSX-R1000 and acquired six positions within the first lap. After mixing it up with J.F. Cyr and Erick Beausejour in the opening few laps Millson settled into the eleventh spot.

With time running out Millson pushed towards a top ten finish, however in the remaining number of laps he was unable to advance his position. A minor off track excursion on the last lap dropped Millson one spot. Quickly remounting he reentered the track to finish 12th overall.

“We were able to set our fastest laps of the weekend midway through the race so that's very encouraging …we’re looking forward to Calgary and the rest of the season” said Millson.

RMP Racing is grateful for the support from team sponsors; Inside Motorcycles, Zox Helmets, Motovan, Infinet Designs, Turn 2 Sportbike School, Essential Image, MotoConcepts and CRC Racewear. Additionally Ross Millson would like to thank; Tri-City Cycle and Sport (Suzuki), Race Tech, Vortex, Hindle, Niagara Powersports and Shaun Fletcher for his assistance this weekend.

Up next for the RMP Racing team is Round 3 of the Parts Canada Superbike Championship at Race City Motorsport Park, Calgary, AB - June 25-28.

McCormick takes ICAR Superbike win

MIRABEL, Que. (June 14) - Saskatoon's Brett McCormick completed a dominant weekend at Circuit ICAR with victory in Sunday's second round of the Parts Canada Superbike Championship, presented by Moto Journal.

The 17-year-old started from pole and led 15 of the 16 laps around the 2.81km (1.74-mile) 14-turn circuit on his Team Suzuki / Blackfoot / Picotte Racing / Suzuki GSX-R1000 to score his second career national Superbike win and take over the lead of the Parts Canada Superbike series standings.

Three-time defending series champion and opening round winner Jordan Szoke of Brantford, Ont. placed second on his Canadian Kawasaki Motors / Kawasaki ZX-10R, 2.218 secs. behind McCormick. Andrew Nelson of Kars, Ont. was third riding the Nelson Racing / Yamaha YZF-R1. "This is a huge win for me. I'm really at a loss for words," said McCormick, who earned his first Superbike national win at last year's season finale. "It's not like last year at the last round, where Jordan was riding for a championship. He gave me a fight today."

McCormick was third off the start behind the Team Toyota Yamaha / OTSFF / Yamaha YZF-R1 of Kevin Lacombe and Szoke. But Lacombe crashed on lap two and McCormick was able to get around Szoke at the same time. Szoke managed to close back in on the Suzuki in the closing stages of the race but was delayed while working through lapped traffic on the penultimate lap.

"I settled into a nice pace and I didn't have to work too hard for a while," said McCormick, who set the race's fastest lap at one minute, 25.337 seconds on lap three. "My front tire was going off a bit near the end but the bike was set-up well enough so I could get around it."With his perfect weekend of claiming pole position, leading the most laps and earning the race win McCormick leads the Parts Canada Superbike Championship standings for the first time in his career with 104 points to the 98 of Szoke.

"I made a mistake when Kevin crashed," Szoke said. "I did a double downshift and went into first gear instead of second and Brett was by both of us. I got a gift from Kevin but I couldn't take advantage. "We've won a lot of championships though and we're not done yet."

Nelson moved into third when Lacombe fell and stayed there the rest of the way to score his first career national Superbike podium. "By lap five my tires went off and I was just trying to be careful the rest of the way," the 26-year-old said. "But I'm stoked with my first podium and hopefully it's the first of many more."

Six-time Canadian Superbike champion Steve Crevier of Maple Ridge, B.C. finished fourth on his Deeley Racing Powered By Buell / Buell 1125R after passing Clint McBain just two laps from the finish.

McBain, from Cochrane, Alta., settled for fifth on his Suzuki Dealers / Acceleration Racing / Suzuki GSX-R1000.

Sixth placed went to the second of the Canadian Kawasaki Motors / Kawasaki ZX-10Rs of Uxbridge, Ont.'s Alex Welsh, who held off a race-long challenge from 14-year-old Royce McLean of Coaldale, Alta. McLean was the top finishing rookie on his Team Toyota Yamaha / OTSFF / Yamaha YZF-R6.

Karl Daigle had been part of this battle but the Granby, Que. racer dropped back in the closing stages to an eighth place finish aboard the A. Perusse Kawasaki / Kawasaki ZX-6R.

Ste-Adele, Que.'s Jean-Francois Cyr was ninth on the CyrRacing / Honda CBR600RR after passing the Blackfoot / Canadian Kawasaki Motors /Kawasaki ZX-10R of Calgary's Dave Stokowski two laps from the end.

Stokowski rounded out the top 10 finishers.

In other action at Circuit ICAR, McCormick led every lap of the Yoshimura Pro Sport Bike race on his Suzuki GSX-R600 to claim his first career victory in that class and take over the points lead from Szoke, who finished second on his Kawasaki ZX-6R, 3.061 secs. behind.

Nelson again completed the podium on his Yamaha YZF-R6. "It was a pretty awesome race and the team's been working really hard," said McCormick, who now has 101 points to Szoke's 99. "I busted out a bit of a gap and was able to put down some fast laps early."

Lacombe was fourth on his Yamaha YZF-R6 and Welsh took fifth aboard a Kawasaki ZX-6R despite a late charge from Crevier and McLean.

Longueuil, Que.'s Sebastien Tremblay outduelled opening round victor Cody Matechuk to win the Armour Bodies Amateur Sport Bike race. Riding the A. Perusse Kawasaki / Kawasaki ZX-6R Tremblay took the lead from Matechuk (Suzuki Dealers / Acceleration Racing / Suzuki GSX-R600) on lap seven of the 14-lap race and held on to beat the Cochrane, Alta. rider by just 0.342 secs.

Jeffrey Dion of Granby, Que. completed the podium aboard his Robitaille Racing Kawasaki ZX-6R.

Rob Busby of Brantford, Ont. earned his second straight Suzuki SV650 National Cup win of the season, beating St-Colomban, Que.'s Raphael Archambault by 7.651 secs. Jeremie Hade Precourt of Granby, Que. completed the podium.

Warman, Sask.'s Bodhi Edie won the Honda CBR125R Challenge race by 10.634 secs. over Hamilton, Ont. racer Steven Nickerson. Edie earned the Tirox Won Big Time Award for enjoying the largest winning margin of the
day.

Pickering, Ont.'s Ryan Roche placed third.

Natalie-Catherine Provost of Laval, Que. won the Pro Honda Oils Women's Cup race on her Honda CBR600RR.

Action from Circuit ICAR will be shown on TSN HD and TSN on Tuesday, July 7 at 1:00 p.m. Eastern and repeated on Friday, July 10 at 4:00 a.m. Eastern. The races will also be televised on RDS. Check local listings for dates and times.

The Parts Canada Superbike Championship continues at Race City Motorsport Park in Calgary June 26-28.

Quebec considering banning under 25yr olds from riding motorcycles

Quebec is considering some new rules for motorcycle riders that is sure to be unpopular amongst many motorcyclists - People under age 25 and anyone with less than five years of motorcycling experience might not be permitted to own motorcycles deemed 'high-risk' under a system being studied by the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ), the provincial auto insurance board.

The SAAQ has posted a list of characteristics of 'high-risk motorcycles' Click the image below for a larger version. Watch out for motorbikes with mufflers placed at the rear and angled upward!

SAAQ indicates that the system would be put in to place strict rules on motorcycle ownership in order to reduce road accident rates in the province. Rising insurance costs are due in large part to riders who experience more accidents. SAAQ claims that younger riders, and particularly those on high-risk motorcycles, represent a large percentage of those experiencing accidents.

So it would seem to make sense but some of those characteristics are pretty broad - like, a rear wheel driven by a chain. Hmmm, most motorcycles are chain driven. Some are shaft driven or belt drive but I don't see how having a chain is a risk characteristic.

The agency's data suggests the risks of accidents is directly linked to cylinder size and the type of motorcycle, so it's divided motorbikes into two categories: high-risk sports bikes designed for speed and performance, and regular motorbikes.

The SAAQ's president, John Harbour, says the tighter restriction will allow riders to work their way up to driving the faster, more powerful models.

"The status quo will remain for those who already ride those motorbikes but the new wave of riders will have gradual access," he said.

Gino Desrosiers, an SAAQ spokesperson, said Monday the agency is looking at France’s registration fee system for motorcyclists and might bring in a similar set-up in 2011.

Over 700 motorcyclists protest registration fees

A crowd of over 700 motorcyclists rallied against rising registration fees through a protest in Montreal on Saturday afternoon.

"Operation Escargot" began at 11:00 AM with a ride at the minimum limit speed of 60 km/hr which took them along the Decarie Expressway, and Highways 13, 20 and 40.

Eric Lessard, a spokesperson for the demonstrators, said he believes the Societe de l'assurance automobile du Quebec (SAAQ) discriminates against motorcyclists.

Registration fees for some motorcycles have more than tripled in recent years according to Lessard.

For example, in 2007 it cost $320 to ride a sports bike. Next year, it will cost $1,400.

More demonstrations have been planned for the coming weeks.

More details on the costs of registration in Quebec are posted here.

Francis Martin signs on with the BMW Motorrad Canada

Looks like Quebec native, Francis Martin has a new gig with the 2009 BMW Motorrad Canada Motorsport Team. He'll be competing on a 2009 BMW HP2 Sport in the Pro Sportbike class in the Parts Canada Superbike Championship.

The newly revamped classes should make for some interesting racing this year. Full press release follows.

Press Release -

Whitby. BMW Motorrad Canada is pleased to announce the addition of Francis Martin to the 2009 BMW Motorrad Canada Motorsport Team.

Martin, hailing from Sherbrooke, Quebec, is a veteran of the Parts Canada Superbike series having competed with five different teams in the series and claiming the Canadian Open Sportbike Championship in 2002 and reigning as Canadian Superbike Champion in both 1999 and 2005.

“I am delighted to be part of the BMW Motorrad Canada race team.” states Martin, adding, “I’m itching to get familiar with the BMW racebike as soon as possible – the season can’t start soon enough!”

Both Mike Ferreira and Francis Martin will be competing in the newly-revised Parts Canada Superbike Championship aboard the 2009 BMW HP2 Sport, race-developed in the last two years of the previous CanadianThunder series. Competing in the Pro Sportbike class, Mike Ferreira will wear number Pro 210, while Francis Martin will display his customary Pro 16.

Chris Duff, Marketing and Race Team manager for BMW Motorrad Canada states : “As we work toward the possibility of entering superbike racing in Canada in 2010, the opportunity to have a two-time Canadian Superbike Champion on the team for 2009 is an incredible bonus.”, continuing, “We are very excited to have Francis on board for this season. With Francis teamed up with Mike Ferreira, a former Pro 600 Sportbike Regional Champion and veteran of two Canadian Thunder seasons with BMW, we are looking forward to seeing BMW running up front in the new Pro Sportbike Class.”

This year sees a heavily revamped landscape for the Parts Canada Superbike Championship with the elimination of the Canadian Thunder and Sport Twin Classes after the withdrawal of Ducati and KTM from the series. This has resulted in major changes to the rules to the former 600cc Sport Bike classes, opening the door for a range of new machinery to participate.

Starting with the 2009 season, twin cylinder motorcycles from Buell and BMW will be allowed to compete in the Sport Bike classes, running to separate weight and horsepower limitations than their 600cc four cylinder opposition.

Considering a new bike? - Better check out insurance first

Motorcycle insurance is always a contentious issue amongst motorcyclists. How much do you pay? What coverage do you have? It's a regular, and frequently 'heated' topic of debate on most motorcycle forums.

Insurance is just one of those things that you've got to have if you want to come to the party. So it's something that everybody knows a little bit about.

Unless you've got very deep pockets and don't care about paying thousands of dollars for insurance you should call around and find out how much it will cost to insure a bike BEFORE deciding to purchase it. It's been said there aren't any un-insurable risks. It just costs more!

The Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) have published a list of motorcycles that they consider "high risk." What does this mean? Well - we've not spoken with the SAAQ to ask them but we can only guess that it means that if you want to insure one of these high-risk motorcycles in Quebec that you're going to pay dearly for the privilege.

Here's a link to the list - it's a PDF.

What's surprising is that if you look at this list, there's plenty of very powerful bikes that aren't on the dreaded "high-risk" list. The Yamaha FZ1 ins't on the list for example. This 1000cc bike packs about 150hp - more than plenty of the bikes on the list. It is a little more upright though and perhaps typically ridden by more mature riders.

There are some bikes on the list you might not expect - a BMW K1200S for example. BMW's sportsbike isn't a typical crotch rocket ridden by somebody that just got their licence. Maybe it's stolen more?

Having had the recent experience of obtaining insurance for a 2006 VFR I know when I called ahead to see what insurance would cost the person at the insurance company said, one moment I'll have to get the list of bikes we don't insure. Hmmm, glad I checked ahead. The VFR isn't on the list but it would be pretty bad to find out a bike is going to cost you a small fortune to insure.

Different provinces have different systems. Some have public insurance, some have private. Here in Nova Scotia we're free to shop around. That works for me. I recently moved from Winnipeg, and in the province of Manitoba they've got a public system called Autopac. I looked into insuring a 2002 Suzuki GS 500 hardly a super fast sportbike, when I was there for a year. What was the quote? Just about $2200. For that - I could have re-purchased the same bike in a little over three years with the premiums!

So, be educated, be wise. If you're shopping for a bike - call around and ask for quotes on some models you're considering before you buy. What you find out might just help you make the right buying decision.

Quebec allows car permit holders to drive T-REX

Looks like if you want to drive a three-wheeled vehicle without a motorcycle licence in Quebec, you'd better have two of those wheels in the front.

The Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) have just allowed holders of Class 5 (Automobile) driving permits to drive the Campagna T-REX or V13R three-wheel vehicles.

In the past, a driver/rider needed a Class 6 (motorcycle) permit to operate these machines.

No word yet from the SAAQ but the ruling doesn't appear to apply to other three wheeled vehicles like the Can-Am Spyder and Harley-Davidson Tri-Glide which have one wheel in the front and two in the back. So it seems you still need a motorcycle licence for these machines.

The T-REX features a 200+ hp engine from Kawasaki, a tubular top structure, windshield, safety belts for added safety, and a price tag of $50,000. The manufacturer expects to sell double the number of models in 2009 as in 2008, or over 200 units.

For additional details on the Campagna T-REX visit their website here.

Canadian Enduro Championship (CEC) in 2009 and beyond!

Canadians will finally have a bonafide Canadian Enduro Championship (CEC) in 2009 and beyond.

Details are:

A 4 event, 8 race series organized by World Enduro Canada (WEC) (see www.worldendurocanada.com)

Dates and locations in 2009 are:

July 4/5 Pincher Creek AB
July 11/12 Okanogan Valley BC

September 12/13 Quebec TBA
September 19/20 Parry Sound, Ontario

Dates and locations are subject to change at this early time

The competition format is based on the World Enduro Championship, 3 different (Cross, Extreme and Enduro) timed special tests and shorter loops of trails connecting the test. WEC purchased a computerized timing system that uses programmable transponders the system provides prompt, accurate results.

An important point is the event offers a pro purse. The value riders have to sponsors increased overnight, the plan is improve the marketability of Canadian
riders, give sponsors good return on their investment, stimulate the off-road motorcycle market, decide who the fastest off-road riders in Canada are in both Pro and Amateur classes, provide spectators entertainment and most of all give the competitors an overall positive experience.

Incentives will be in place for riders to travel to the four events which are scored separately each of the two days. Arrangements have been made for a motorcycle transportation package through sponsor Brian Kurtz Trucking, Guelph, On. For $700 a bike, gear bag, 2 spare tires or pop-tent will be transported to each of the 2 'Away' events and back. Motorycles will be delivered to each event site. Also any Canadian-based rider who crosses the Manitoba/Ontario border and competes in the entire series gets a free entry to the 'away' events. Entry fees are set at $100 per event, each competitor must purchase or rent a transponder for $40 and join the MCC.

The motto of the CEC is "The Fastest Rider Wins".

Because the format of the competition aligns with what happens in most of the world WEC expects Canadian riders to become more competitive in international events in the future.

Walking away from a high speed t-bone

Stephane Perry of St-Jerome, Que is a Canadian motorcycle rider who believes in the usefulness of the airbag feature of his Honda Goldwing. He's the first Canadian to have some firsthand experience doing real world testing. He had a shiny new - one month old 2008 Goldwing that included the airbag. The airbag is in place of where the fuel tank is on many motorcycles.

Here's the situation - he was out riding his 2008 Honda Gold Wing travelling about 100 kilometers an hour along Highway 132 when a Hyundai Tuscon pulled onto the highway without looking... A crash was inevitable, and Stephane plowed into the front wheel/fender of the SUV at 80 to 90 km/h.

Normally this type of contact with a vehicle and a motorcycle would almost certainly be a very serious one for the motorcyclist; they surely would be launched from the bike; perhaps into traffic or into the vehicle they're hitting. That wasn't the case for Stephane and as he realized he was going to crash he hoped the airbag would work as claimed. Guess what - it did!

Instead of launching through the air and into danger, the entire experience was like "hitting a mattress," so relatively cushy was the impact, Perry says. It wasn't without drama though, "it was loud" he says. Like the many motorists who have experienced an airbag deployment in the confines of a sedan or SUV -- that the air bag inflating sounds like a shotgun going off right beside your eardrums.

"The sound was just terrible," says Perry, noting that it really was the only scary aspect of the entire experience other than those couple of nanoseconds when he realized he was going to T-bone a car at high speed.

After arriving to the scene and seeing the damage to motorcycle and the SUV, the police and emergency workers didn't believe he was the accident victim! Stephane was taking some pictures of what was left of his bike and the other accident debris when they arrived. He walked away with some bruises on his legs and a sore shoulder.

His precious Goldwing was barely a month old at the time, and now has to be replaced. Stephane says that the replacement must have an airbag - "A motorcycle without an air bag is not an option anymore," Perry says.

And he's the first Canadian to be able to say that from firsthand experience.

'Trippin' on Two Wheels visits Quebec

Way back in April we told you about a TV program called 'Trippin" on Two Wheels and their plan to air a segment filmed in Quebec.

Basically though, the show features Dennis Gage (that guy with the crazy mustache from My Classic Car) his son, and motorcycle photojournalist Neale Bayly. They travel the globe to exotic locations, all on two wheels.

They're riding three Buell Ulyses and manage to find their way onto some pedestrian walkway by mistake. I'm sure we'll hear more about this in show!

The Quebec segment is supposed to air on the Speed Channel July 13th but you can catch a preview of the segment here:
