The Historic Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) Endorses International Female Ride Day.

With its huge increase in popularity year after year, the 2010 International Female Ride Day has officially received the endorsement of the Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme known by most as the FIM, the international body that governs motorcycle racing and activities around the world. “This is important recognition for International Female Ride Day” says Vicki Gray, the founder of the International Female Ride Day and of MOTORESS. “It shows that this event has succeeded in increasing awareness of women motorcycle riders in the broadest sense of the activity. We are so pleased to have the support of the FIM. Unquestionably, this will allow International Female Ride Day to reach a new summit of women rider participation”, Vicki adds.

This 4th edition of International Female Ride Day has also once again received the recognition of the Canadian Motorcycle Association (CMA), the national body representing the FIM in Canada. "The Canadian Motorcycle Association is proud to be a supporter and congratulates Vicki on the continued expansion of International Female Ride Day”, expresses CMA Chief Executive Officer, Marilynn Bastedo.

At its inception in 2007, the campaign became an immediate success as women embraced the concept and the chance to participate. International Female Ride Day “fever” significantly magnifies each year and 2010 expects to host more riders and participants than ever before. Canada, United States, Australia, England, The Netherlands, Greece, Italy, Poland, Israel, Qatar, Hungary, Switzerland, Denmark, South Africa - and numerous other countries who once again will be contributing to the campaign in compelling numbers.

Sport bike, cruiser, scooter, off-road, touring or competition, no matter what type or style of motorcycle interest, International Female Ride Day makes one simple request of women – Just Ride! Get on your bikes, be out there and be visible. The concept has assembled its power and participation in this simple, globally synchronized theme linking the chain of women through the shared activity of motorcycling. One day to celebrate and highlight the many numbers of women who share a passion for the sport. The fact that every rider participating is a role model for women, who have not yet taken their first step to enjoy motorcycling, is a role worth embracing.

“International Female Ride Day is truly gaining its popularity and following with all the support from motorcycle governing bodies”, adds Vicki Gray who also observes an increase of the recognition of the event amongst the motorcycle industry around the world. “The popularity of this event comes from its simple concept and focuses to the female rider; inviting women enthusiasts of all brands, styles and types of motorcycling to play a role. Additionally, the campaign gives the industry a huge opportunity to share their support and get involved and making it incredibly easy to do so”, says Vicki.

Participants are invited once again to upload/send in their picture to MOTORESS in order to receive the 2010 souvenir. The first 100 images received by participants showing how they spent Friday 7 May will be eligible, along with the required form. Women are also welcome to post their photos on the International Female Ride Day group on the facebook.

The special edition 2010 Female Ride Day t-shirt is available again this year online. It’s seen as a collectible. “We hear from women who have made it a habit to purchase the t-shirt each year”, exclaims Vicki. This year the t-shirt is manufactured in natural bamboo and organic cotton fabric, the latest Ecco friendly trend.

30 Years of BMW "GS" - event. Get your ticket to Germany!

BMW Motorrad celebrates two round anniversaries: the “BMW Motorrad Days” will be held for the tenth time from July 2nd to 4th this year: it is the largest meeting in the world featuring motorcycles of the Munich brand. Another highlight will be the 30-year anniversary of the GS models. BMW R 80 G/S founded the market segment of large-volume travel enduros in 1980.

With its unique atmosphere, the “BMW Motorrad Days” is highly popular with bikers from all over the world. This is firstly due to the event location Garmisch-Partenkirchen with its impressive Alpine panorama. Secondly, the event combines authentic Bavarian style with a diverse motorcycling program and a great party atmosphere.

This time round a particular attraction will be the 30th anniversary of BMW Motorrad’s GS concept. Contemporaries from various GS decades - decision-makers, developers and riders - will be there to mark the anniversary. There will be a special BMW Classic exhibition featuring milestones from three decades of GS, showing the success story of the then brand new concept of the large-scale enduro was to set in motion. Visitors will be able to try out the current state of development for themselves: training courses will be provided on BMW GS models at the 10,000 m² BMW Enduro Park Garmisch. And on the adjacent cross-style “x-track” there will be BMW G 450 X and Husqvarna models available for test rides. Of course virtually all other BMW motorcycle models can be borrowed for extensive test rides, too.

The study “Concept 6" provides a look into the future with its transversely mounted but very narrow in-line 6-cylinder engine.

For beginners without a motorcycle licence BMW Motorrad offers try-out courses in a closed-off area and for anyone with a lucky streak, the dream of owning a brand new BMW motorcycle could even come true there and then: there will be a draw for a F 800 GS on the Friday evening and for an R 1200 GS on the Saturday evening.

Those wishing to explore the Alpine roads on their own machine can take part in guided panorama tours through the mountains.

However, the breathtaking stunts performed by motorcycle acrobat Chris Pfeiffer in the Freestyle Area should preferably not be imitated. He will captivate visitors by performing the same fast trick combinations with which he won the 2009 German Open in stunt-riding, where he prevailed against the best stunt riders in the world. On the “x-track”, world-famous enduro riders will be getting into top gear and providing spectacular off-road motor racing entertainment.

Another undisputed highlight will be the Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport, which once again lines up for the start of the Superbike World Championship with the racing version of the S 1000 RR. The team under Berthold Hauser, Head of BMW Motorrad Motorsport, featuring factory riders Troy Corser (Australia) and Ruben Xaus (Spain) will provide an autograph session and photo opportunities for fans.

The grand motorcycle convoy on the Saturday and the Classic Convoy on the Sunday, starting and finishing at Hausbergplatz, have become an integral part of the “BMW Motorrad Days”. The Classic Convoy is now one of the rare opportunities to see two-wheel rarities and legends from 87 years of BMW motorcycle history in action. This will be a particular attraction in the GS anniversary year. Four-wheel BMW vehicles will also be available for test driving at the “xDrive Circuit” - the BMW X5 and BMW X6.

The support program includes presentations by over 60 international exhibitors with everything from tuning and accessories to travel and training in the area of off-road, on-road and racing. BMW Motorrad also provides a tyre service in collaboration with Metzeler. The parties on Friday and Saturday evening with live bands and DJs have long achieved legendary status. For the first time, “BMW Motorrad Days 2010” will host the live show of the ladies’ band WILDCATS.

Immediately adjacent to the event grounds there is a 15,000 square metre camping area with bathroom facilities. As in previous years it is also possible to make hotel reservations in various categories at bmw-motorrad@gapa.de. Please be sure to make bookings in good time.

Turn 2 Introduces Suspension Tuning Course

Turn 2 Sportbike School is proud to announce its partnership with Accelerated Technologies to present Canada's first Suspension Tuning Course - STC1.

The course is offered exclusively through Turn 2 at Calabogie Motorsports Park, and will feature in depth classroom sessions on suspension set up and tuning. Lessons will include basic sag settings, damping and bottoming theory, chassis geometry tuning using ride heights and spring rates, with their resulting effects on variables such as weight distribution and swing arm angle.

Taught by Accelerated Technologies own John Sharrard, each classroom session will be followed by an on track riding session to test and reinforce each topic discussed.

Riders are encouraged to bring and use their own bike for this course, or rent one from Turn 2. Either option will allow you to demystify in the classroom, then feel 'on track' the differences between compression damping, rebound damping, ride height and preload helping you to better understand your machine and become a more proficient rider in the process.

Classroom sessions will be a mix of instruction and hands on tuning with access to your bike as well as cut-a-ways and demos to aid in understanding the inner workings of your bikes suspension.

Contact the Turn 2 Sportbike School or visit www.turn2.ca for more information or to register.

- You can pay for your personal entry at that time as well.
- If you prefer, one of the other members of your team can pay on your behalf while they enter themselves.  A comment must explain who the payment is for.
- Make sure you either quote your team name or your members
- No single riders.  You must ride as a team of 3 to 5 max.  If you have 6 people, make 2 teams.  Each person must be registered individually.
- Starting numbers of the teams will be drawn at random, however if you wish to ride near the back of the pack we can accomodate.
- Further P2D newsletters will be released in the coming months, to entrants only, to help with your preparation.

It is a 16hr long day of riding, and it must be taken seriously.  It is attainable, many people have proven this fact.  But, it is not easy.  That's why it is called a Challenge.  You do not need to be a superstar, but you do need the right frame of mind.  The event covers a wide variety to terrain types, so you and your machine must be versatile.  Working as a team adds to the challenge, and will be an advantage if done right.

March 6th is for teams that have at least 1 member who has ridden in this event before.  This is a very important factor, as this person will have an understanding of what it takes to complete the event.
March 20th is for those teams that are new to the event.  The maximum entry size has been expanded this year to encourage new teams.

Remember - the last running of the P2D was sold out in 12 hours.  This year we are reserving a percentage of the entry for new teams.

We went to the big Atlantic Motorcycle and ATV show this past weekend (Feb 12-14) and although there seemed to be a few exhibitors that didn't come around this year; I'd say the show was still a success.

Many of the major manufacturers were there and they had their 2010's on hand. We took lots of pictures and here's just a small sample of them for you. We'll be updating the site soon with a more thorough listing of pictures.

PEI - it's not just about Anne of Green Gables

There's a new attraction coming to PEI in the summer of 2010 - a motorcycle rally. The rally is aptly named, the Red Island Run Motorcycle Rally, for the Island's famous red soil.

It'll be the inaugural year for the event and hopes to attract 1,000 motorcyclists and 1,500 visitors. Tourism Charlottetown is on-board and jointly announced the event with the Red Island Run organizing committee on Friday.

If the event attracts the numbers they're expecting it could provide economic impact of about $1.5 million. Hopes are that it will grow as people discover what Prince Edward Island has to offer as a tourist destination.

The weekend rally (Aug. 27-29, 2010) includes a poker run with proceeds going to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of P.E.I., a motorcycle parade, entertainment, vendor village, and trade show.

The trade show will feature demo rides from various motorcycle manufacturers, including Harley Davidson, a Dyno, and other various exhibitors.

Check out the Red Island Run website for more detail as it becomes available. You can also call the Bell Aliant Festival Hotline at 1-800-955-1864.

World Enduro Canada continues expansion for 2010

World Enduro Canada is very pleased to announce the continued expansion of the MCC in off-road racing in Canada with the WEC - CMRC Ontario Cross Country Championships. 2009 was a year where WEC focused their efforts on the Royal Distributing Canadian Enduro Championship and the Wiesner Insurance Canadian Trials Championship. 2010 will see World Enduro Canada broaden their scope of competition disciplines.

“Even though our attention was sharply focused on the disciplines of Enduro and Trials, we were working for the past year in the background with race organizers and land owners to create a Cross Country series in Ontario for 2010” says Sean Wiesner of World Enduro Canada.

“Ontario, as we know, has a long history of off-road racing and has hosted some very good events over the years and we have seen some talented riders emerge. The fact is; there is a much greater depth of talent in Quebec and in the West than what currently exists here in Ontario. It is our full intention of promoting Cross Country racing in this province to a level that will attract new riders to the sport and motivate those good riders we have to a level of excellence where they can compete at a National and International level. We will be working with some highly motivated new event organizers with new venues. You will also see Cross Country racing at some National level Motocross facilities. I am also very happy to say we will be working alongside some very experienced Ontario Clubs. It’s going to be a great year for Ontario racers.”

This new series promoted by WEC, will be sanctioned by the Canadian Motorsports Racing Club who also sanction the premier Motocross Series in Canada. The partnership with the CMRC demonstrates the co operative nature of the MCC Competition Working Group and exemplifies the unification that is happening within Canadian motorcycle competition.

Through our partnership with the CMRC, WEC is looking forward to attracting many of the talented motocross racers in Ontario to test themselves on these courses that will combine MX tracks with woods and grass track sections.

To compete in the series a World Enduro Canada competition license will be required. They will be available online for $70 at www.worldendurocanada.com . CMRC Motocross licenses will also be accepted so these riders will not need a separate license to try out Cross County racing. In addition, off-road riders looking to try out CMRC Motocross need only to upgrade their WEC off-road license to a full CMRC license for an additional $50.

Sponsors for the series and various rounds will be announced prior to the beginning of the race season.
Spring Series

Event organizers are hoping to attract not only Canada's best, but some top notch riders from around the globe.

More details come by way of the Press Release:

Dinosaur could survive this place!

Now for the first time in Canadian history, a premier ‘Extreme Hard Enduro’ event will be staged in the ‘Badlands’ where the Dinosaur species came to rest… This event will test the desire of the modern day Off-Road motorcycle enthusiast and present those brave enough a chance to beat XTINCTION!!!

CGRT founder and Xtinction mastermind Lee Fryberger has been working diligently to make this event a reality. “This is my backyard ~ yes it is rugged ~ but it will offer an incredible riding experience for those brave enough to try. With the advent of ‘Extreme Hard Enduro’ events in recent years; as well as CGRT’s involvement in many of these events; I really wanted to combine our experiences and bring this type of event back to North America.”

“We have recently secured access to an incredible area for XTINCTION. It is the most compact ~ gnarliest terrain imaginable and will offer unbelievable spectator and media viewing opportunities! Best of all, it is the perfect place to showcase the immense skill and precision of the competitors” adds Fryberger.

The event will offer a significant purse to attract the best riders from Canada, the U.S, and even Europe. In addition, a CMRC sanctioned Harescramble event will be help the day prior to allow the vast majority of enthusiasts a taste of the ‘Badlands’ without the potential of facing XTINCTION!

2010 Parry Sound Sportbike Rally a go!

The 2010 Parry Sound Sportbike Rally will be continuing on for 2010. At a September 22nd council meeting the town agreed to provide $10,000 for advertising and free usage of the Kinsmen Park for the July 8th to 11th event.

Because of some liability issues they're going to be dropping a couple of events off the roster; the radar run and the amateur stunt show.

Numbers were down slightly in 2009 from 2008. Registered participants in 2008 were 335 people, versus 473 in 2008. Middaugh said might have to do with headquarters being moved from the Bobby Orr Community Centre to Kinsmen Park. Additionally, she said, there was also a motorcycle reunion the same weekend.

“For the past two years, the Parry Sound Motorcycle Association (PSMA) has organized the annual Sportbike Rally,” said Middaugh in her report to council. “The 2009 headquarters were at Kinsmen Park. The event has, to some degree, become part of the Parry Sound culture and attracts hundreds of spectators/participants. The PSMA has significant event organizing experience among its members. By directly organizing and hosting the Sportbike Rally, PSMA has strengthened its organization and formalized their governance structure. This is a good example where, with the town’s support, non-profit and community groups’ capacity has been built.”

Zero heading to Canadian PHEV'09 Conference

Stephen Bieda, Director of Sales - Canada for Zero Motorcycles is going to be in attendance at the Plug-In Hybrid and Electric Vehicles conference and trade show is being held in Montreal from September 28th to 30th.

Doesn't look like he's presenting based on the schedule for the day. Too bad... Might have been pretty fun for some of the attendees to hop on a Zero and do a few loops around the conference to shake the dust off. No offense to some of the presenters but some of those topic seem like real snoozers!

Over 90 speakers from Canada, USA, Europe and Asia are expected at the event. So it does look like the place to be if you're interested in electric vehicles and the technology of electric vehicles... like really, really interested.

If you're really, really interested you might want to check out the event website - HERE.

Cristine Sommer Simmons interviewed on RIDE!

Adrian Blake over at RIDE! is going to be interviewing three-time motorcycle hall of fame inductee Cristine Sommer Simmons, live from the 2009 AMA International Women & Motorcycling Conference in Keystone, Colorado.

Cris will talk about the history of women and motorcycling and her new photography book The American Motorcycle Girls: 1900-1950. Tune in on August 19 at 5pm ET.

Check out the podcast HERE .

According to the Amazon description of Summers' book:

Chris Sommer Simmons, something of an American motorcycle pioneer herself, has been collecting photographs of women motorcyclists for nearly thirty years. A long time rider, often on a Harley-Davidson, she has scoured photo collections across the country and then spend hundreds of hours researching the contents of the photographs she has found. This book is the best of her veritable treasure trove. 'Charming' is the best word to describe each and every shot. Equally, one might say 'informative' or even 'evocative' but in truth this is a hugely significant work that seeks to charm and inject the reader with nostalgia for a surely bygone era.

Two Canadian Bands Set to Rock BMW Summerfest

Two great Canadian Bands will be entertaining the masses at Mosport this July 17-19 weekend at the 2009 BMW Motorrad Summerfest. Halifax based Sloan and Toronto based Crash Parallel will be taking the stage on Saturday.

There's going to be a lot more than music at Summerfest too though. Racing, BMW Marketplace, on and off-road test rides, an off-road skills course, and demo rides.

Plan to be there! Full press release follows -

Courtesy of Canadian Superbike:

Canadian recording artists Sloan and Crash Parallel will headline the BMW Motorrad Summerfest as part of the Parts Canada Superbike Doubleheader at Mosport, July 17-19, Canada’s biggest motorcycle road racing event of the year.

The bands will take to the BMW Motorrad Concert Stage on the Saturday of the manufacturer’s three-day motorcycle lifestyle experience, making its return to Mosport for the third year. Designed to cater to the motorcycle enthusiast, Summerfest features the BMW Marketplace, on and off-road test rides and an off-road skills course. New for 2009 is the addition of BMW Motorrad Enduro rider Guy Giroux, who will act as an instructor for the off- road skills course.

Formed in 1991 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, four-member Sloan released its first record in 1992. Since then, the band has recorded and released 10 records to critical acclaim across North America. Sloan’s contemporary, yet instantly recognizable rock and roll sound has endeared them to a large and devoted fan following across the continent, particularly in Canada. Nominated numerous times during their career, Sloan has won four East Coast Music Awards and a Juno Award. Now based in Toronto, Sloan’s latest record, Parallel Play, was released in 2008.

Relative newcomers to the Canadian rock music scene, Toronto’s Crash Parallel was formed in 2005 and released their successful debut album, World We Know, in May 2008. The record has produced five singles to date, including the smash hit, World We Know. The band hit number one on the Billboard Emerging Canadian Artist Chart in the spring of 2008 and won the 2009 Canadian Radio Music Award for Best New Group of the Year.

In addition to Summerfest, the Yamaha Riding Academy will once again be offering it’s free riding clinic for children ages 6 to 12. The Academy provides professional instruction to youngsters on how to ride off-road motorcycles in a safe and fun manner.

Adults will also have any opportunity to do some riding when top manufacturers such as Suzuki offer demo rides on their latest models on neighbouring roads near Mosport. With the exception of the Yamaha Riding Academy (which supplies all required equipment), participants for all riding activities must have a valid motorcycle license, riding gear and helmet.

The Parts Canada Superbike Doubleheader, the only Toronto-area stop for the national Parts Canada Superbike Championship, features Canada’s top riders.

Three-time defending Superbike champion Jordan Szoke of Brantford, Ontario, and current points leader, 17 year-old phenom Brett McCormick of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan will battle it out in two points races against a deep field of perennial contenders and up-and-coming stars.

The weekend schedule also includes races in the Yoshimura Pro Sport Bike class, the Armour Bodies Amateur 600 Sport Bike Championship, the Suzuki SV650 Cup, the Pro Honda Oils Women's Cup Challenge and the Honda CBR125R Challenge.

Children 12 and under are free when accompanied by a paid adult admission. Single day tickets are also available.

Today is Ride to Work Day!

Today, Monday June 15th is the 18th Annual Ride to Work Day. The event helps advocate and support the use of motorcycles and scooters for transportation, and providing information about everyday utility riding to the public.

So get out, get on your motorcycle, and ride to work!

From the RTW website:

The annual RTW Day moves to the ‘third Monday in June.’ The next Ride to Work Day is MONDAY, JUNE 15, 2009. It is the 18th annual Ride to Work Day. Reasons for an earlier annual Ride to Work Day include:

The new day is not as hot in most northern hemisphere areas, and not as cold in most southern hemisphere areas. June weather is more favorable worldwide.

The new day provides an increased opportunity for more riders to Ride to Work. Many workplaces close for summer holiday in July - especially in Europe.

A Monday event encourages motorcycle and scooter commuting to continue during the entire week.

Positive media exposure will increase. Sundays are slower ‘news days’ so there will be more coverage like this: “Look for more motorcycles on your commute tomorrow, as Monday is the annual Ride to Work day...”

The Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) has endorsed this day, and is promoting the ‘Third Monday in June’ worldwide as the annual Ride to Work Day.

Let the Madness Begin!

The Mad Bastard Scooter Rally is just days away, and Team KYMCO is ready to ride! This year’s rally has proven to be bigger and madder than ever – and with all 75 rider positions filled, there have never been so many mad bastards out on the road at once!

With the Gatineau Four Points as this year’s home base, the rally takes riders on a 560km journey through Quebec and Ontario – but if you’re serious about actually WINNING the rally, you must complete the bonus leap, which brings the total km travelled to 749. Rally Master Rob Harris has revealed that the route will be particularly challenging for the 50cc class as there are lots of hills along the route.

The charity aspect of this year’s rally has taken on a life of its own. The online pledges officially ended yesterday at 12:01pm with a grand total of $11,920.37 collected for Kids Help Phone. KYMCO Canada’s own Director of Finance and Communications, Sabina Heilman, lead in online pledges, collecting an amazing $1,575.00. Riders are still able to collect pledges the old fashion way and bring all moneys collected to the rally to submit directly to representatives of the Ottawa chapter of Kids Help Phone.

Team KYMCO wishes all participants a safe, fun, exciting, and above all MAD weekend!

CEC Press Release June 1, 2009

The Canadian Enduro Canada Press Release for June is hot off the presses...

The June issue of MXP Magazine has just hit the newsstands and mailboxes and has a two page write up on the Canadian Enduro Championships. MXP, one of the top Motocross publications in Canada, got behind the CEC from the start. MXP has always been a leader in Motocross coverage and is now getting into the Off Road scene by dedicating a few pages of each issue to the CEC. In addition MXP is helping to advertise the series by distributing the event posters across the county with their dealer mailings. Be sure to get every MXP issue, or better yet Subscribe, to get the news and details from the series.

Metzler Tires, long known for their well designed off road motorcycle tires, will be awarding a set of their MCE 6 Days Extreme Tires to the Pro and Amateur Champions in each class.

Our good friends and long time WEC supporting sponsor Nexo Sports has come on board once again for the CEC. As one of the World’s most prolific manufacturers of quality motorcycle riding wear Nexo Sports has, in recent years, made their mark on the Canadian market. Nexo will be the provider of official WEC /CEC gear for the 2009 season.

The new World Enduro Canada website has been very well received judging by the volume of web traffic. We are constantly adding new material to keep everyone up to date on the CEC as well as Trials and Cross Country events.

For more details visit the WEC website here.

Motorcycle Experience - successful 09 season

We received word from Dave Hatch, host of Motorcycle Experience, about the show having wrapped up for the season (along with some details on viewership numbers). Dave is also promoting the 7th Annual Ride To Remember that's coming up on Saturday, June 6th - it's a fundraiser for Camp Trillium and looks like it's going to be a fun event for motorcycle riders and families.

Full details below:

Motorcycle Experience has now wrapped up yet another successful broadcast season on TSN. As you know, there has been a lot of news in the Canadian press these past months, lamenting the fact that overall television viewership is down. Well we can tell you that certainly wasn’t the case with Motorcycle Experience this year, in fact, just the opposite. This spring, as we celebrated our 20th year on the air, our overall audience ratings actually grew by 15%. We are very happy to report that over 1.3 million viewers tuned in from all across Canada to see the show. So…let us just say “thanks” to everyone who tuned us in and helped to make the show once again a major success!

And speaking of success…one final piece of business for this year, don’t forget that you are more than welcome to join us next week at our 7th Annual Ride To Remember. If there is any way you can ride to our annual motorcycle celebration dedicated to raising funds for Camp Trillium, we encourage you to do so. This is always a great event and this year we are remembering our dear friend, Maxime Mercier. Here’s what we have in store for you this year.

Toyota Truck presents 7th Annual Ride to Remember!

Everything is now set to go next week for this popular motorcycle rally. This annual fund raising event for Camp Trillium celebrating all things on two wheels, has so far helped Motorcycle Experience and the local Prince Edward Fire Fighters and their wives donate over $80,000 dollars to Camp Trillium.

This year the Ride to Remember will touch down for one day only at the Picton Airport on Saturday June 6 and once again our partners BMW, Suzuki, Honda, Buell and Harley-Davidson will be inviting licensed motorcycle riders to sample their new motorcycle lineups on a scenic demo ride through Prince Edward County. In keeping with our desire to keep the Ride to Remember a family oriented celebration, this year we’ve added two new and exciting features: the Buell Stunt Riding Show and a massive R2R Classic Car Show. There will also be the popular R2R Silent Auction that now boasts over ten thousand dollars in new motorcycle related items and while visitors check out the great deals they will also be able to enjoy the 6 Live Bands we have performing on site all day, in the Currahs Café entertainment zone.

Many eastern Ontario motorcycle dealers will also be on hand, displaying the very latest in riding gear and accessories. Back by popular demand is the Yamaha Riding Academy. The Riding Academy is a popular mini bike training area for children aged six to twelve! The folks from Yamaha provide the instructors, bikes and all the riding gear, and no experience is required. Soooooo…..

If you want to keep your feet on the pegs and your right hand cranked check out the R2R website at www.ridetoremember.ca for more details, and get set to ride next week up to the Picton Airport for the a day you will never forget!

We look forward to seeing you there…

Dave and Stacey Hatch

A Mad Scooter Rally in support of Kids Help Phone

The Mad Bastard Scooter Rally taking place June 12-14 usually draws a pretty eclectic group of scooter enthusiasts, and this year is no different! With only a handful of spots still available and registration still open, we are confident that all 75 rider positions will be filled.

Who’s riding so far?

Some of the teams include: “2 Up 2 Crazy” (two passengers on one scoot), “Dirty Girls” (an all girl team), “Go-Go Mods”, “TMSC” from the Toronto Moto Scooter Club, “The Knights of the Wandering Sausage” and “Team CaucAsian”.

It is quickly becoming apparent that participants of the Mad Bastard Scooter Rally are a generous bunch. In a little more that two weeks, participants have already raised $2,600.00 for our official MBS rally charity, Kids Help Phone.

The Kids Help Phone is a nation wide organization that has been helping Canadian children for over 20 years. Pledges collected by MBS rally participants will help provide Canadian children with toll-free, national, bilingual, phone and web counselling, as well as referral and information services.

This fantastic organization is open for children and youth 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

If you would like to make a donation to the Kids Help Phone please visit the official Mad Bastard Scooter Rally in Support of Kids Help Phone page.

7th Annual Ride to Remember - June 6/09 (ON)

Dave Hatch, host of TSN’s Motorcycle Experience, says everything is now set to go for the re-launch this summer of the popular Ride to Remember motorcycle rally in Eastern Ontario. The annual fund raising event for Camp Trillium celebrates all things on two wheels, and, along with the support of the Hallowell Firefighters, has donated over $80,000 dollars to Camp Trillium.

This year, the Ride to Remember will touch down for one day only at the Picton Airport, on Saturday June 6. Hatch noted that the event had been in hiatus for a couple of years after the Ride For Sight motorcycle rally set up camp in Trenton two years ago. “The Hallowell Firefighters felt that there was no way we could compete with a national fund raising machine like the Ride For Sight when it moved into the neighborhood,” Hatch said, “so we decided to take a break, but now that the Ride For Sight has moved back up to its' original site in Collingwood, that pretty much opened the door for us to kick start the Ride To Remember.”

Thanks to the generosity of the owners of Loch Sloy Holdings, local bikers will enjoy Factory Demo Rides provided by Suzuki, Honda, BMW and Harley-Davidson starting from the rally’s original host site located up at the historic Picton Airport. Once again the manufacturers will be inviting licensed motorcycle riders to sample their new motorcycle lineups on a scenic trip through Prince Edward County.

In keeping with the firefighters wishes for the Ride to Remember to remain a family oriented happening, this year they’ve added some exciting new features like the Buell Stunt Riding Show. There will also be a Massive Silent Action that boasts some of the best motorcycle bargains in Ontario, and while the bikers check out the deals, they will also be able to enjoy Live Music on site all day. Many local motorcycle dealers will be on hand, displaying the very latest in riding gear and accessories, and a couple of local farm equipment vendors have promised to bring along their spectacular line-up of 2009 ATVs. Back by popular demand is the Yamaha Riding Academy. The Riding Academy is a popular mini bike training area for children aged six to twelve! The folks from Yamaha provide the instructors, bikes, all the riding gear, and no experience is required. Keep your feet on the pegs and your right hand cranked, and ride up to the Picton Airport for the Ride to Remember. We look forward to seeing you there!

7th Annual Ride to Remember - Saturday June 6

Picton Airport - 9:00 am to 5:00 pm

$10.00 donation at the gate / students $5.00 / children under 12 free

Ride for Sight event dates posted

We've just updated the Motorcycle Events calendar (best viewed with any browser other than Safari) with the dates for all the Ride for Sight events listed across Canada. We thought we'd post the schedule for you here too and provide a little information about this worthwhile event:

Ride for Sight is the longest running motorcycle charity fundraiser in Canada; the first ride began in 1979 in Central Ontario.

In 2008, eight Ride for Sight events will be enjoyed in seven provinces across the country (Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Northwest Territories, Maritimes, Newfoundland, Central Ontario and Northwestern Ontario); each regional Ride has its own unique features.

Annual Ride for Sight weekend celebration events are supported in part by generous corporate sponsorship and are organized by volunteer Ride for Sight Planning Teams.

While Ride for Sight participants are primarily comprised of motorcyclists -- volunteers, fundraisers and supporters also include non-motorcyclists and families affected by retinal diseases.

Ride for Sight is the single largest private fundraising initiative for vision research in the world.

To-date, Ride for Sight has raised more than $17 million in support of the Foundation Fighting Blindness, the only organization in Canada whose sole mandate is to fund research for blindness caused by retinal degenerations.

June 15th is Ride to Work Day

June 15 is Ride to Work Day! So keep the car parked at home on June 15th and ride your motorcycle instead.

The event encourages motorcycle owners to leave their cars in the garage and ride their bikes to work to demonstrate the benefits of two-wheeled commuting. Organizers say the event will show that motorcycles and scooters are efficient, economical forms of transportation.

Out of a total 129 million commuters in the US in 2003 only approximately 150 thousand of them ride motorcycles to work regularly.

Of all the motorcycles registered in the USA, (6,567,197) 4.3% of them are used for year-round primary transportation (282,389), with an additional 9.9% used seasonally for this purpose (932,542 total).

Ride to Work Day is observed in the United States, Canada, Ecuador, France, Germany, Great Britain, Israel, Mexico, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Turkey and Russia.

A few highlight pictures - Atlantic Motorcycle |||amp; ATV Show

If the crowds of people in attendance are a measure of success then it appears the Atlantic Motorcycle & ATV Show was a BIG success. The exhibitor spots were sold out and the place was packed wall to wall with all the most exciting motorcycles on the Canadian market.

All the big manufacturers were there, and even plenty of the smaller ones, and some you've probably never heard of too.

*Click the image for a larger version.

The RC8 from KTM. It's hard to believe but it looks even better in person than it does in pictures. If you ride this on the street you're going to get tickets and people are going to be following you around to talk to you when you stop. It looks amazing!

The new rocket ship fast, buttery smooth K1300GT from BMW. This model features the Japanese style signal switches which are located on the left. No more right handed right turn signal.

An Ad Bovin equipped BMW 450 Enduro. This might be just the ticket to extend the riding season here in the Great White North.

Because the 1098S just wasn't good enough Ducati brings us the larger displacement 1198S. Better sign up for some track days if you're getting one of these!

The 2009 ZX6R that went on a big diet and lost an incredible 20lbs. And oh yeah, about 8 more horsepower too.

Get ready to see plenty of these on the roads and trails near you this summer. The new, long awaited, BMW F800GS is here.

The new Suzuki Gladius. It'a mid-sized naked featuring the ever popular SV650 v-twin engine. New for 2009.

The KSM200 is Konker Motor's (a Langley BC based company) first street legal motorcycle. Featuring a 200cc engine built in a Suzuki partnered factory - it's said to be the same engine as the Suzuki DR200. Coming soon to a dealer near you!

May 9 – Training Day – Cobourg

The morning will be spent with brief GPS training, bike set-up and riding technique sessions. You will then follow a GPS route to the off road training center and rotate through several technical training sessions in small groups. Contrary to previous years, a greater emphasis will be placed on skills training. Lunch will again be provided. Afternoon sessions concentrate on off-road riding technique training and practice, before returning to the start via another GPS route. All sizes of bikes are welcome. This event is the perfect way to shake out the cobwebs from a long winter, and learn some new techniques.

Spring Training Day

Training day is held the day before Mother’s Day. In honour of our mothers, sisters, daughters, aunts and friends, this event will be a fundraiser for the 2009 Weekend to End Breast Cancer. Riders from previous years will know that this is the fourth year that Lynda Burnett and her sister Laura Murray will walk in the 60 km event. Proceeds will be donated to team T.W.I.N.S. (Transforming Walking Into New Strength). There will be pink ribbon merchandise available for sale for Mother’s Day gifts, and Gatorade and Power Bars will also be for sale.

June 4-7 - R.A.P. Round Algonquin Park.

Four days of riding start in Minden and proceed around Algonquin Park. Each day ends at a different motel and your equipment will meet you there. The proven route (downloaded in it’s entirety to your GPS prior to the start) is well timed allowing you to have time each night to relax, have a beverage and chat about your ride with the other participants. Due to the size of the ride and the planned accommodations, registration is limited. Register early to avoid disappointment. Support riders within the group and the support truck are never far away if needed. The ride is best for bikes up to 700cc.

June ?? – Jim Kelly Memorial Trail Ride – North of Barrie

Halton Off Road Riders club - see www.horra.ca – Part of the OFTR Trail ride series. Proceeds go to the ISDE Gold fund.

July 12 – Blue Mountain Tour

This GPS Dualsport Tour consists of a long loop, which starts in Orangeville and goes to Collingwood (Blue Mountain) and back.

There will be a lunch stop midway through the ride. The ride is comprised of a mix of gravel, road allowances, and 2 track all day.

The route is not the same route as last year, and has more technical sections than before.

The length of the route is approximately 300km.

Aug 22-23 – Rock Hound Rally

This rally is a 12hour 500km Rally in the Kawartha and Madawaska highlands. Registrants can come up and stay Friday night. The rally begins Saturday, lasts all day, and returns to the same hotel late that evening, with ample time to compare stories all night. On Sunday morning there will be another short timed stage, before returning for the awards presentation in the afternoon, leaving lots of time before heading home. Teams of 3 complete a large loop route throughout the day, covering areas stretching well up into Haliburton and over to Calabogie. There will be timed stages and free areas along the route. The timed stages will have open and closing times. The free areas will consist of gravel areas and 2 track and will leave time for minor repairs, picture taking and relaxing. The timed stages contain the technical areas and are all business. Points will be based on the ability to maintain the appropriate speed averages during each timed stage. This event is ideal for 450cc through 990cc aggressive dualsport bikes. Details to follow.

Sept 26 – 27 - Corduroy Enduro Dualsport

Join in with the crowds at the infamous Corduroy Enduro. Toronto Motorcycle Show preview

The Toronto Motorcycle show is this coming weekend.

We can't possibly tell you everything that's going on at the show, with upwards of 150 exhibitors you can bet there will be something that should interest just about every motorcycle enthusiast. But as a bit of a sneak peak, here's what the big names are scheduled to display:

BMW Motorrad Canada will be bringing the new K1300S, R and GT along with the F800GS that has finally started to show up at dealers (much to the delight of those who've already put deposits on them and anticipated a September arrival). Riders that like the dirt might be interested in seeing the G450X Enduro. Those of you who are more World Superbike than off-road adventure will surely enjoy BMW's, still under development, S1000RR, BMW's World Superbike entry that won't hit the racetrack in 2009.

Ducati will have the new 1198S Superbike, the Monster M1100S, and may also bring along a Desmosedici Moto GP replica streetbike with a retail price in the 80 thousand
range.

Honda should have the 2009 DN01, a $17,499, 680cc tourer with an automatic transmission. Not to disappoint, the CBR600 and CBR1000 sportbikes should be there as well showing off the new optional anti-lock brakes.

Kawasaki will show off the Vulcan 1700 series and the new ZX-6R 600 sportbike that is said to be an almost unbelievable 10 kg lighter than last year's model. Canadian Superbike and Pro 600 Champion Jordan Szoke and teammate Alex Welsh will be there too doing some autograph sessions.

KTM has said said they'll be showing off the 1190 RC8 Superbike and their single-cylinder 690 Enduro; the most powerful single cylinder on the market.

Deeley Harley-Davidson will have the 2009 touring models and Tri-Glide trike and the previously Euro-spec only XR1200 Sportster. You'll get a look at the Police Edition of the Buell Ulysses too.

Suzuki will be bringing the all new GSX-R1000, new Boulevard M90, and the SFV650 (or Gladius)- a naked styled bike using the famed SV650 v-twin engine. Suzuki will also show off some Canadian only models such as a 650 and 1000 V-Strom that come with locking hard bags and topbox as standard equipment.

Yamaha will have the new V Max, the 200-horsepower rocket!

Nova Scotia Off Road Riders Association event a success

A sold-out crowd of over 100 enthusiastic off-road motorcycle riders and their families marked the formal launch of the Nova Scotia Off Road Riders Association (NSORRA) event schedule and 2009 membership drive. The Association’s inaugural trail ride and demonstration event was held on Saturday, October 18, 2008 on private property in Falmouth, Nova Scotia. Drive to Ride showcased off-road motorcycling as a fun, family-friendly sport, and highlighted the role of the Association in safety and skills training, environmental awareness and strengthening the motorcycling community in Nova Scotia.

“We are thrilled by the terrific turnout”, noted Association President Paul Wamboldt. “We know that there is a lot of competition for family time and attention. Of the 100 people here, almost forty are 18 or younger, and are here riding with their families. They’re learning about safety, respecting the rules of the road, and having fun while enjoying a beautiful fall day. This event perfectly showcases our sport, and why it is worthy of our support and promotion.”

Along with the trail ride, skills demonstrations, and skill testing events, 22 kids under 16 received formal instruction by certified NSORRA coaches, earning their safety training certificate, in preparation for the event. This training is a key
responsibility of the Association, and the Drive to Ride event provided a great opportunity to raise awareness of the new rules and regulations governing riders under Nova Scotia’s Off-Highway Vehicles Act.

Canadian Enduro Championship (CEC) in 2009 and beyond!

Canadians will finally have a bonafide Canadian Enduro Championship (CEC) in 2009 and beyond.

Details are:

A 4 event, 8 race series organized by World Enduro Canada (WEC) (see www.worldendurocanada.com)

Dates and locations in 2009 are:

July 4/5 Pincher Creek AB
July 11/12 Okanogan Valley BC

September 12/13 Quebec TBA
September 19/20 Parry Sound, Ontario

Dates and locations are subject to change at this early time

The competition format is based on the World Enduro Championship, 3 different (Cross, Extreme and Enduro) timed special tests and shorter loops of trails connecting the test. WEC purchased a computerized timing system that uses programmable transponders the system provides prompt, accurate results.

An important point is the event offers a pro purse. The value riders have to sponsors increased overnight, the plan is improve the marketability of Canadian
riders, give sponsors good return on their investment, stimulate the off-road motorcycle market, decide who the fastest off-road riders in Canada are in both Pro and Amateur classes, provide spectators entertainment and most of all give the competitors an overall positive experience.

Incentives will be in place for riders to travel to the four events which are scored separately each of the two days. Arrangements have been made for a motorcycle transportation package through sponsor Brian Kurtz Trucking, Guelph, On. For $700 a bike, gear bag, 2 spare tires or pop-tent will be transported to each of the 2 'Away' events and back. Motorycles will be delivered to each event site. Also any Canadian-based rider who crosses the Manitoba/Ontario border and competes in the entire series gets a free entry to the 'away' events. Entry fees are set at $100 per event, each competitor must purchase or rent a transponder for $40 and join the MCC.

The motto of the CEC is "The Fastest Rider Wins".

Because the format of the competition aligns with what happens in most of the world WEC expects Canadian riders to become more competitive in international events in the future.

Heroes Legend - The Classic Offroad to Dakar

Disappointed that the Dakar won't follow the classic Paris to Dakar route this coming year? Always dreamed of riding in the sand of Lac Rose?

We'll you've got an option: The Hereos Legend.

Remember these dates: March 7th to 21st, 2009. That's when you could be riding to Dakar!

Should you desire to accept this challenge of a lifetime you can sign yourself up for the Heroes Legend. It does offer a little more flexibility than the original. For example, there are two levels of difficulty routes you can sign up for, you can bring a partner to relay with during the event, or even a team. Let's face it though 6,000 + kilometers of sand and off road riding is going to be difficult no matter what.

All type of motorbikes are eligible. Off road and trail but all technical modifications must comply with traffic laws. The organizers transport your belongings and your spare parts.

Organizers say that "this event is a response to most “professional” races organised today, which have become financially unaffordable and physically insurmountable
for an amateur pilot." So prices should be more affordable than if you were competing in the ASO organized Dakar Rally.

If you're experienced rider or driver you can choose to drive all the stages and choose the more difficult routes. If you're not a very experienced off road rider you can pick and choose the level of difficulty and routes you want to take based on the information provided at a daily briefing.

For more details on the event be sure to check out the Heroes Legend website here.

News from Nipponia

We got an email from the folks at Nipponia. We can only guess that it's in response to our recent posting about the EICMA, that they were doing a press release at the event, and that we hadn't heard of them.

** UPDATE - The folks at Nipponia sent along the only publicly available photo of their new Vorrei model which will be just one of the whole new range of scooters they'll be presenting at the EICMA exhibition. You'll get to see the rest of the range following their presentation on November 4th, 2008.

Here's what came in the mail:

We are pleased to inform you of the launch of our new range of scooters that will take place at the EICMA international motorcycle exhibition in Milan, Italy between the 4th and 9th of November this year.

Nipponia has been active in the motorcycle market for many years. Our first company, Nipponia Boeki was established in 1992 in Saitama, Japan. Since then, it has been specializing in the international trade of motorcycles, mopeds and scooters and maintains a client network around the world, ranging from Southeast Asia to the Middle East, Africa, Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean. Apart from Japan, we maintain a presence in the Dominican Republic (Nipponia Caribe CxA), in Venezuela (Nipponia Venezuela CA), in China (Nipponia Shanghai Ltd) as well as in Greece, where our headquarters are located. Our main goal has always been to offer motorcycles that meet our customers’ everyday needs for safe and reliable use, at an affordable price.

In relation to this, we have recently developed a new range of scooters, bearing the Nipponia brand name, which will appeal to the modern everyday consumers. They incorporate elements of innovation and originality in both design and development. The design, in particular, is the outcome of the company’s cooperation with the renowned automotive designer Sotiris Kovos (Toyota Yaris, Lexus SC430) resulting in a scooter series with unique lines, like no other offered on the market today.

Although external design is a crucial factor, we believe that engineering is of even greater importance. With this in mind, we tried to create innovative and quality solutions through use of engines with increased output and improved performance, reduced fuel consumption, enhanced reliability and superior design, but also through improvements in performance and design of frames, as far as safety and comfort is concerned.

Please note that the official presentation of the new scooter series, will take place at 4:00 pm on Tuesday, November 4th at our stand, booth M65 in Hall 4.

If you're interested in learning more about Nipponia feel free to check them out at http://www.nipponia.com

World's biggest motorcycle exhibition - November 4th

World's biggest motorcycle exhibition will open its doors on November 4th at Milan, Italy to an ever increasing public.

This year at Milan's EICMA exhibition, we should see several new motorcycles and scooters - probably not as many as last year when it seemed everybody had something new.

But like at Intermot show in Germany, there will no doubt be a lot of Asian manufactured electric motorcycles and scooters showcased.

The main conference day is Tuesday, with 2 conferences called on Monday and one on Wednesday.

Several companies have announced that they're be doing a press conference at the show. Which would generally indicate that they have something interesting they want to make public - but time will tell. Here's the list of companies:

Yamaha - Yamaha have organized a conference the day before the show opens (Monday), and it's held off-site.

Ducati - They're having their press conference the day before the show opens. Fighter model perhaps?

Honda - Honda starts off the press conference heavy Tuesday

New Max - New Max have several brands of clothing and helmets. Haven't heard of these folks.

BMW - Having already announced three new K series models at Intermot it's hard to say what they'll have to say.

Husqvarna - These guys immediately follow BMW (they're a subsidiary of BMW) and both are scheduled for 30 minutes a piece.

Leo Vince - Might be a good guess that the Italian Leo Vince will probably be presenting new exhausts.

KTM - KTM have two conference, one on Tuesday and one on Wednesday (together with Zadi - an Italian parts manufacturer). Rumors are that they may show an electric motorcycle.

Aprilia - The Piaggio group's Aprilia have 15 minutes so not too much time for big announcements here.

Moto Guzzi - Piaggio group's Guzzi have 10 minutes

Gilera - Piaggio group's Gilera have 15 minutes

Vespa - Piaggio group's Vespa have 15 minutes

Piaggio - Piaggio themselves took 15 minutes

Scarabeo - Piaggio group's Scarabeo have 10 minutes

Derbi - Piaggio group's Derbi have 10 minutes

Kymco - Scooter manufacturer Kymko rarely call for conferences so there will likely be something new out of this Taiwanese company.

Nipponia - Never heard of these guys.

Suzuki - Suzuki have 30 minutes but announced new bikes at Intermot so we're not sure what to expect here.

Metzeler - Tire manufacturer Metzeler are closing the day with a press conference

RallyConnex Corduroy Enduro Dualsport Ride Sep 21st

The 55th running of the Corduroy Enduro is coming up this September 20, 21. If you're living in Ontario or anywhere nearby you may want to attend this popular event.

Organizers claim it's Canada's Premier 2 Day National Enduro, which draws amateur and professional enduro motorcycle riders from all over North America.

Rally Connex is signing people up for some guided tours and all inclusive weekend deals - with proceeds going to the Cord Enduro Fund.

Here's some additional details straight from Rally Connex:

*****

The riding season is far from over. As a matter of fact, we seem to have the place to ourselves. The summer tourists seem to have retreated back to the big city, leaving all the trails for us.

With this in mind, you should pack your bike and tent/trailer and head to the Corduroy Enduro Weekend up in Gooderham. It has always been an incredible two day enduro, but lately it has been turning into a two day celebration of off-road riding.

The Gooderham Community Center has a huge lot, which serves as the headquarters for all the festivities. Surrounding and supporting the enduro event, there are multiple tents with entertainment and room for feeding the riders and spectators. This is known as the "Corduroy Lounge" and is the place to be on Saturday evening.

When you pre-enter the all inclusive dualsport ride you will get the following:

- Spectator bus on Saturday
- Commemorative T-shirt
- Saturday Dinner
- Sunday breakfast
- Vintage bike display
- Beer tent
- Tenting and trailer parking on-site.
- Tire change contest and entertainment on Saturday evening
- Fully supported dualsport ride all day Sunday, which visits various spectator points along the enduro route.

All this for $100.

A portion of the proceeds are going to the Cord Enduro Fund, in order to ensure the future success of the Cord Enduro.

You do not need any kind of competition licence, CMA membership, to enter the dualsport ride. However we always recommend that you become a member of the Ontario Federation of Trail Riders (not mandatory though).

The Corduroy Enduro website is www.corduroyenduro.ca

Info on the Saturday Trail Ride is found at http://www.oftr.ca/events.php?id=2341

The Dualsport Tour will take riders through some of the most scenic trails and backroads of the Haliburton Highlands. Enjoy the relaxed pace and lack of timekeeping pressure that the enduro competitors will be feeling. Spectate at various points along the enduro course and cheer on your favourite riders battling for the coveted Corduroy Log trophies, and the Canadian Enduro Championship.

This is a GPS guided route, so we will load your Garmin GPS during Saturday evening or during breakfast on Sunday morning. If you do not have a GPS, you can tag along with us, or rent one for the day to try it out.
Knobby tires are recommended.

Pre enter at www.rallyconnex.com - note: the on-line entry on the website is currently reflecting the Sunday only amount. The all inclusive weekend deal (adding on the Saturday evening supper, t-shirt, and Saturday bus tour) will appear on Monday. Remember, proceeds are going to the Cord Enduro Fund.

Start location: Gooderham Community Center - south east of the main intersection at Hwy503 and Hwy507, south of Haliburton.

-the Community Center is on Community Center Rd (go figure!) - look for the RallyConnex trailer next to the "Corduroy Lounge".

****

Looks and sounds like it'll be a great weekend. Mark your calendars and get ready for some good times!

Just about 28 years ago, Bourque was a youth diagnosed with aplastic anemia, a rare condition where the body stops producing enough new blood cells. Bourque was one of the first Canadians to receive a bone marrow transplant.

The Motorcycle Lobster rally was introduced five years ago, when Bourque and fellow organizer Helen Elliott (who had an aneurysm that kept her from walking for two years) decided they wanted to host an event that sought to recognize how the community rallied around both of them during their health difficulties.

"We decided it was time for me to give back to the community so that's where the idea for the rally came from," said Bourque.

And so a great event was born...

Money raised by the rally goes to the Moncton Lion's Sick Children's Fund, a charity which helps families with seriously ill children by giving needed financial assistance.

Last year about $14,500 was raised for the cause and organizers hope that total tops $20,000 this year. Last year the money helped a child from Sackville, NB who had aplastic anemia.

Highlights of the rally event include a casino and dance under a big tent at Parlee Beach Provincial Park, a burn out competition and a downtown biker party and custom bike display which will shut down Shediac's Main Street on Sept. 5. Bourque said this event is great for the entire family to attend and take part in.

Other events on the rally's schedule includes a poker night, free rounds of pool for registered bikers and a steak or lobster supper.

International Six Days Enduro - only 45 days away!

This year the International Six Days Enduro (ISDE) is being held from September 1 through September 6th. It's the oldest 'off road' motorcycle event on the FIM Calendar and it's going to be held in Serres Greece this year. First held in 1913 at Carlisle, England. It has occurred annually, except from a couple of interruptions due to World War I and World War II.

It's a grueling 6 day event. The route for the first day and second day has a total length of 235km, 3nd-4th day will be 267km, the fifth day is 215km, and it wraps up on the sixth day in the Motocross Track inside the Serres Circuit. Those distances may not seem huge, but remember they're off-road, and on some pretty challenging terrain.

While the event itself is six days, many of the Canadian participants will be heading over on August 24th to get the bikes prepared for testing and impounding on the 28th. So it's actually more like 14 days! The Coordinator's days start at 5am, and they're lucky to get to bed before 1am.

In recent years the event has attracted national teams from as many as 32 different countries; Canada included. We'll be sending some Canadians over this year too. According to the most recent information on the ISDE 2008 website, there's going to be at least nine Canadians on the participant list.

Canadian, Lawrence Hacking has competed in the event six times in the past.

Good luck to all the participants but especially the folks from Canada!

Ride a Spyder - Near You?

The Can-Am Spyder Demo tour is crisscrossing North America. Here's a listing of the Canadian events that haven't already taken place yet.

July 18th - Edmonton, Alberta
July 19th - Ayr, Ontario
July 20th - Guelph, Ontario
July 20th - Calgary, Alberta
July 23rd - Pefferlaw, Ontario

If you don't know about the Can-Am Spyder - it's a three wheel vehicle that is said to offer the performance of a traditional motorcycle with much of the peace of mind of a convertible or a sports car. It is powered by a Rotax 990 V-Twin engine that produces 106 hp.

Although it's said to offer similar performance to a traditional motorcycle it's ridden much differently than a motorcycle. You don't lean a Can-Am Spyder. The rider has to move around on the machine much like a snowmobile rider would to maintain balance in corners.

So it's a totally different machine but may be appealing to many. It certainly looks sporty.

Celebrity Biker Author appearing during Laconia Bike Week

From ECW Press:

Edward Winterhalder was known as “Connecticut Ed” in the Bandidos Motorcycle Club, where he was a high-ranking world leader until his departure from the organization in the fall of 2003. Winterhalder is now considered to be one of the world’s leading authorities on motorcycle clubs, and will be autographing copies of his new book The Assimilation during Laconia Bike Week at the following locations:

Note: They're all in the US unfortunately but close enough a ride for many East Coasters.

-Borders, 76 Fort Eddy Road. Concord, New Hampshire
Saturday, June 21st, 1pm to 4pm. Info: 603-224-1255

The Assimilation: Rock Machine Become Bandidos–Bikers Unite Against the Hells Angels recounts Winterhalder’s personal involvement in the creation of the Quebec Bandidos; his friendship with the key players who made it happen; and his eventual disillusionment with, and exit from, the Bandidos Nation. Beginning with a short history of the Bandidos, Winterhalder dispels common myths about the founding of the club and outlines the original principles of its founder Donald Eugene Chambers.

In the early 1990s, after seven years of bloody conflict with Montreal’s Hells Angels, Quebec’s Rock Machine motorcycle club appealed to the Bandidos for help. Winterhalder, a born diplomat with an extensive knowledge of law acquired while incarcerated in the early 1980s, was dispatched to Canada in 2001 to coordinate the transition (or “patchover”).

The Assimilation takes readers behind the scenes of Winterhalder’s arrest and unsuccessful deportation proceedings by the Canadian authorities, Bandido politics, double-crosses and assassinations. The book also contains a glossary of biker terms and seven appendices citing club bylaws, projects and job assignments, and a worldwide listing of active chapters and support clubs.

Winterhalder, now 52, is the author of Out in Bad Standings: Inside the Bandidos Motorcycle Club; The Making of a Worldwide Dynasty (Blockhead City Press) and a contributor to The Mammoth Book of Bikers (Carroll & Graf). Events of Winterhalder’s life are the basis of a major character in the new Sons of Anarchy television series, which will debut this fall on the FX channel.

Motorcycle tourism boosts local economies

This past weekend, the inagural Ring of Fire motorcycle rally in Windsor, Nova Scotia was expected to inject $1 million dollars into the local economy. That's not too bad for one weekend.

The town is normally home to just shy of 4,000 people. The Rally boosted those numbers by approximately 7,000. Participants started rolling in on Friday in the town that's best known for their world-record pumpkins and other agricultural exhibitions.

Two streets were closed off to all traffic except motorcycles. Motorcyclists packed the downtown streets with thousands of motorcycles, four rows deep.

Needless to say local business people were thrilled with the turnout and greeted the motorcyclists with windowshop signs and trying to lure them in with products geared towards them.

Based on the success of this event its just its first year the business people of Windsor will likely get to welcome the bikers again next year.

Port Dover thinks they'll be in Guinness Book

Press Release CNW:

We mentioned a couple of days ago that the folks in Norfolk were trying to set a Guinness Book World Record and it looks like they've probably done it. Norfolk County officials tagged almost 12,000 motorcycles at PD13 today, as part of the attempt at a Guinness World Record for the most motorcycles.

"We estimate that more than 30,000 motorcycles visited Port Dover as part of this event, based on feedback from our dedicated team of volunteers who assisted with the count at several checkpoints around the town," said Clark Hoskin, Manager of Tourism & Economic Development for Norfolk County. "Our tag team handed out the majority of tags by noon on Friday the 13th."

Motorcycle enthusiasts arrived from across North America, including New York, California, Quebec, Georgia, Maryland and across the Great Lakes region. Some bikers claimed that they attended the event primarily because they wanted to participate in the Guinness World Record attempt.

"We will be preparing the package for the Guinness World Record organization in the coming days and submitting our information, so the numbers are unofficial right now," Hoskin added. "Port Dover is the first community hosting a motorcycle event where an official Guinness World Record has been attempted."

Port Dover is a key destination among motorcycle enthusiasts, and many bikers look forward to the perennial Friday the 13th biker rally festivities in this fishing port along Ontario's South Coast. The event is organized by the PD13 Committee, a hard-working group of community volunteers.

Bikers who participated have the opportunity to win prizes, by logging their individually numbered tags into the Norfolk County Tourism website at www.norfolktourism.ca. Photos and other information related to the Guinness World Record attempt will also be shared on that website.

Port Dover Ontario tries to break world record

This Friday the 13th, a bike event held since 1981 will once again try to cram as many bikers into the lakeside town of Port Dover; normally home to about 5,000 people.

Organizers of Friday's bikers rally in Port Dover are going to count all the motorcycles that come into town this Friday, something they thought was impossible before and just offered estimates of the number of attendees.

Held every Friday the 13th, the event can see 100,000 or more people and bikers from all over Canada and the US and other parts of the world. That's a number they're hoping to smash this year. It's HUGE. So huge that they're trying to break a world record this year and are tagging all the bikes to keep a tally. The record they're shooting for is "largest single-day parade of motorcycles."

Cindy Vanderstar, promotions co-ordinator for Norfolk's tourism and economic development department indicated... "Motorcycle tourism is a huge industry," noting bikers tend to be well off and have money to spend.

"We've got lots of coastline for them to drive around. We're trying to attract them to come here another time."

The drive for a world record has itself created more interest in the event, Vanderstar said.

She estimated her office has received 1,000 calls from bikers from as far away as British Columbia, Prince Edward Island, Florida, England and Ireland. Many of them want to come, she said, specifically because a record-breaking attempt is underway

If you'd like more details about the event check out the PD13 website http://www.pd13.com/

Nova Scotia biker event raises big bucks

This past Saturday (June 7th) was the 28th annual Ride for Sight and it drew participants from the four Atlantic provinces. If you don't know what it is - The Ride for Sight is the longest running motorcycle charity fundraiser in Canada and the single largest private fundraising initiative for vision research in the world.

To-date, Ride for Sight has raised more than $16 million in support of the Foundation Fighting Blindness, the only organization in Canada whose sole mandate is to fund research for blindness caused by retinal degenerations. A very worthy cause.

The chairwoman for this year's event was Ms. Fraser-Parks has been participating in the event since 1996.

"Friends brought me to my first one and I just fell in love with the cause," she said just after parking her motorcycle and turning off the engine.

"Taking part in the ride enables me to combine something I love doing — driving bikes — with something worthwhile, which is helping find a cure for a variety of retinal diseases that cause blindness."

Ms. Fraser-Parks mentioned that as a diabetic she realizes there is a possibility she could become blind.

"Experiencing what I have and knowing what I might face puts things into perspective."

Each of the bikers who participate raise funds all year, and their pledges are recorded in donor books that are turned in when they register for the ride.

"Last year we brought in $37,000 and I hope we can blow that figure out of the water this year," she said. "I think we can because the weather is a lot better today than it was last year. We’ve attracted bikers from the three Maritime provinces and Newfoundland."

The full tally hasn't been made yet but she pointed out that bikers who registered early Friday evening had already brought in $10,700.

"A lot more bikers have joined us since then, and to those pledges we will add the proceeds that we raise through the auction, which is getting bigger and better every year."

There are more events scheduled for other parts of Canada soon.

Alberta - Calgary (June 13 - 15)
Alberta - Edmonton (June 13 - 15)
Central Ontario (June 20 - 22)

2008 Isle of Man is upon us

Practice runs for the 2008 Isle of Man Superbike TT (tourist trophy) have begun! The event takes place from the 24th of May to 6th of June.

Even if you're not a big fan of motorcycle racing, the TT is something really different and special. One thing that makes it stand out is that its been around since 1907 and the second is that it is run in a time-trial format on public roads closed for racing by an act of the parliament of the Isle of Man. Last year, the 100th anniversary, attracted 60,000 fans to the island and many, many more via television.

The two expected top runners this year are Guy Martin and John McGuinness. Honda's Gary Martin was the fastest in the 2008 TT's timed practice session on Monday, running a 126.020 mph lap on his CBR1000RR. John McGuinnes wasn't too far behind though. The Padgetts Manx Gas Honda rider turned his best lap at 125.960 mph.

That's just over 200 km/hr if you're doing the math. On public roads! At points on the course there are spectators mere feet away having a pint on the patio of a pub. It's pretty spectacular. These guys appear to be absolutely fearless. At the speeds they're traveling and on the roads they're on a crash is almost surely to be fatal. You'd never know it by the way they attack the course.

If you missed the first century of the event you should do yourself a favor and try to catch some of this century's events.

More details can be found on the Official Isle of Man website here. Unfortunately for us Canadians, the Internet seems to be about the only way to keep tabs of this event. We haven't seen it airing on TV here at all. Feel free to let us know if it does though!

The Northern Stars are having a Cruise-In the Rock event July 17-19 in Cornerbrook Newfoundland.

What's a Cruise-in you may wonder. Well here's how the Northern Stars describe it:

What is a Cruise-In:

A Northern Stars Cruise-In is an international motorcycle rally held annually to help bring members and friends of members to a central meeting point for festivities and fun. The Cruise-In´s were first started in the US in 2000, and the first one for the Northern Stars was in 2004 at Nordegg, AB. 2005 was in Rocky Mountain House, AB. 2006 was in Moncton, NB, and 2007 was in Kamloops, BC.

The Cruise-In is hosted by a Provincial Constellation with help and support from the ISRA, Northern Stars & Yamaha Canada.

During the three or more days of the Cruise-In there are many events. There are Group Rides, Vendor Displays, Merchandise Booths, Bike Games, Show N Shine, 50/50 draws, Silent Auctions, and much more. There is usually a Dinner & Dance on one of the nights, and an awards ceremony on the final evening.

The Northern Stars started primarily as an internet based group, and over time events such as the Cruise-In have brought together people that have only known each other on message forums. You will always hear people saying that it's great to finally put a face to the name. It always means so much more to be able to talk face to face with people that you may have known on the internet for years. People travel great distances to attend the festivities of this Annual Cruise-In. The greatest distance traveled by motorcycle thus far for a Cruise-In is 6500Km one way.

Come join the Northern Stars for the 2008 Cruise-In in Corner Brook, NL July 17-19, 2008. You won't be disappointed.
